Ever feel bad travelling without a knife?

I had to fly this week, so...no knife with me. I hate it. The thought, insane as it is, crossed my mind, for just a second, "I could mail myself a knife, then mail it back..." How nuts is that?

Yeah but I travel carry-on only. I could check a bag I guess but I haven't done that in years. I HATE baggage claim. Too many times things get screwed up.

I always check a bag when I fly. I hate lugging around a bunch of bags in the airport. Last time I flew I took a knife and a multitool with me, in checked luggage. No problems.

If for some reason I couldn't, and was going to be gone for a while, I would pop by the nearest sporting goods store and pick out a nice inexpensive SAK that I wouldn't mind owning, then put it a cardboard mailer and mail it back to myself before I left. Or some cheapo at the hardware store or a gas station, and just pitch it or give it to someone before I left. Otherwise I'd just do without for the duration of the trip.

The last time i flew was June of 2005 and i took my big S&W SWAT in my duffel bag. Didn't have a single problem. Not a great knife but i wasn't about to risk losing my spyderco or benchmade.

Yes, I don't like it either. Sometimes I go to areas of friends or family and I can borrow one. They are more than agreeable because they know when it's returned it will be sharp. DM

Yes. It is torture.

I've never flown with a knife before actually. I have heard of knives getting stolen by TSA but aside from that and problems with baggage claim
what other problems are presented with putting a knife in checked luggage? Don't you just turn that bag in at the counter and, I assume, they X-ray/search
it and put it on the plane?

To the OP, I don't that's insane really. If I were going to be anywhere for a reasonable amount of time I'd want at least one of my blades, so mailing might be
an option. I don't think it would be worth it if you were only going to be out of town for a couple of days though.

I suppose there is always the option of buying a cheapie while you are there and then mailing it home at the end of your trip. I flew on quite a few planes when
I was in the military, but currently I don't like the idea of going anywhere I can't bring along my toys.

Nope. Because I never do.
Since you don't ever check a bag, it sounds like a perfect way to expand your collection. Just fly knifeless, then buy a knife once you're there. Mail it to yourself right before you fly home and you'll beat it there.
I have a specific fixed folder I put in my checked baggage because it is replaceable, legal in most areas, and enough knife for daily tasks: Kershaw Clash.

Now that's an idea. Gives me something interesting to do while travelling besides meetings.

Yes. That's why I don't. I haven't flown since 2004. I refuse to go anywhere (court being the exception) that uses screening devices to make sure that I have no weapons.

This. I feel naked without a knife. Flying is too expensive anyway... I'd rather buy another folder.

My local V.A. hospital uses metal detectors, pat downs and tons of cops, it's pretty ridiculous.

I leave my knives in the car at the VA but I'm not completely naked. I'm a whiz with a good pair of steel toes.

It drives me nuts not having a knife when I travel. And unfortunately most of my travel is either to knife unfriendly states, or knife unfriendly countries. I have special easy to replace knives for longer trips

I bought an extra Buck 110 to keep at my pops' house for when I fly there. Otherwise, I've been risking it and just stashing a knife (in checked baggage) I have duplicates of and wouldn't completely lose it over if it were lost. My last two trips that has been a Benchmade 940, though I still don't want to lose it! :

I fly plenty and realized I'm not comfortable without a knife I really enjoy. Beaters won't do; why put all the cool memories on a lesser knife?

I absolutely hate traveling without a knife, so if possible, I mail a knife to my destination so I'll have one when I'm there - then mail it back when I leave. A bit of a pain in the backside but better than being without a pocket knife.
