Ever feel bad travelling without a knife?

No, that's just plain stupid, and criminal. Having a prohibited item, regardless of intent can get you up to an $11K civil fine. Intentionally carrying one will almost certainly get you arrested and earn more than a few visits to the relevant US District Court.

Another reason I refuse to fly.

Im actually flying to reno on a red eye this morning and i have four diffrent knives out do i take a plain jane beater 25 seb, mammoth mnadi, umnumzaan or plain small tanto 21 the tanto has been everywhere flying but i just got the mnandi and i so want to be able to bring it. I will put it in my checked bag and i have always took a sebenza with me but its still scary thinking i could lose it. But i dont want to be stuck a thousand miles from home without a blade ??? So im taking one of them just not sure which one its a terrible sickness being addicted to knives lol.

I had to fly this week, so...no knife with me. I hate it. The thought, insane as it is, crossed my mind, for just a second, "I could mail myself a knife, then mail it back..." How nuts is that?

Just fly and buy. An Opinel or lower-end Victorinox (Classic, Cadet, Recruit, Tinker, Spartan) hardly cost anything and you can give it away when you head home.

Another option if you'll be able to receive mail where you're going, is to buy something cheap on that big auction site and have it mailed to where you'll be. I'd done this before.

I don't fly often, and when I do, I don't check luggage. I just 'buy and toss' an inexpensive knife when I get to my destination.

This is why I always bring an extra toothbrush:

On a side note, I've tried to do some research but it's kind of hard to find where all the confiscated items go... You KNOW there are literally crates full of knives, scissors, multi tools, etc. that just sit around.
What happens to the stuff that people forget they had in their pocket...?

IN Austin we have a Texas State Surplus store, where all TSA confiscated items go. Buckets of confiscated SAKs, multitools, and knives. Cheap as dirt (SAKs are .99 I believe) and fun to riffle through.

While I know it happens, I think all this worrying about TSA stealing your knife out of your luggage is overstated. I travel 1000s of miles every year both in the U.S and outside and I have never lost a single knife. The only people personally know that have lost knives while flying were Ken Onion and an advanced collector now passed on. Both were traveling with cases filled with nothing but knives rather than a folder buried somewhere down in their socks and underwear. That probably makes for a lot bigger temptation to the sticky finger types.

TSA employees prefer to steal iPads.

This is true.

Yeah, I think so too. I like to have a few quality folders at my destination--so I pack them in pockets or shoes. Just like the "regular" public, I'd bet 99% of TSA agents don't know a Spyderco from a gas-station special.

I have an external pocket on my suitcase that carries a Micra. It goes from my pocket to my bag, when I check in. That helps minimize the "Where is my knife?" feeling. It goes back in my pocket as soon as I get my bag!

"None of the above". I wouldn't risk losing a multiple hundred dollar knife.

Now you know one person more.
Benchmade Adamas and mini tuff lite CS. Gone from my sock in a locked (TSA lock) suitcase. Baggage handler or TSA is the only explanation.
From then on only cheap stuff.
This year I'll be away for 3 months so might check in something better but dissemble it and spread it over multiple suitcases.

Many times in this thread people have spoken of mailing their knives to the destination. Checked baggage should be as secure as the Post Office, it used to be.

The heightened security is not the problem. The lowlifes and mismanagement it has engendered is. The airlines share much of the blame. I read on a travel site to not put valuables in checked baggage. It went on to say that the airlines have made the decision that it was cheaper to pay for stolen items than to heighten the security of your valuables. It further went on to say that there would be paperwork and long waits and payment at depreciated value (which of course would discourage reporting).

In a hotel reading this thread. Checked my bag with american airlines. Had a SOG Twitch2 in there. STOLEN by AA. Employees stole the personal property of a paying customer. 😡

One of my things is hitting pawn shops where ever I go. Always find crazy deals. If not I grab an okay knife and give it away after.

I'm a compulsive "pocket-patter," so I have mini panic attacks every time I travel without a knife (or any time I'm without a knife). I feel so naked, and I don't even carry for self-defense. I've just had a knife on me for the majority of my life...
This is me. I've carried a knife since I was ten, and feel naked without one. So on the few occasions I fly a knife goes in checked luggage.

I'm luckier than my dad, though. He won't travel without firearms for self defense, so he's refused to fly since the late 70's.
