Ever feel bad travelling without a knife?

It's such a habit for my left hand to check my left front pocket for my knife. I only realize how often I check to make sure it's there, when I'm not carrying it. It must number over 100 times a day. I agree, it's torture to be without a knife in your pocket.

Yea I hate that when I travel carry on only, I usually take either one of these options:

1) Buy a cheap S&W or whatever at a sporting goods store when I get there and then just toss or give it away when I leave. Did this recently in the Florida Keys, I flew carry on only and spent like $15 on a S&W "tactical hostage rescue black operations whatever BS", used it out on the water the time I was there and just left it in the rental car when I left.

2) Go the prison route...a liberal spray of Pam and a deep breath goes a long way...in it goes!*

*I don't actually fly with a knife concealed in my rectum.

It would be like forgetting your dog for a hunt. In some cases yeah you don't need it when going out. But the majority of the time, yes that mothertrucker better be with you.

Just landed in Austin TX. Walked through security with my ceramic Boker.

I had to fly this week, so...no knife with me. I hate it. The thought, insane as it is, crossed my mind, for just a second, "I could mail myself a knife, then mail it back..." How nuts is that?

It's not. I always consider that, but usually end up leaving it in my luggage & hoping it is still there when I get where I'm going. I hate not having a knife with me, I use one so often it drives me nuts if I forget to put one in my pocket.

That's the way to do it, I was thinking of picking one up myself. I'm supposed to go on a fishing trip soon down in mexico

This is why I always bring an extra toothbrush:

On a side note, I've tried to do some research but it's kind of hard to find where all the confiscated items go... You KNOW there are literally crates full of knives, scissors, multi tools, etc. that just sit around.
What happens to the stuff that people forget they had in their pocket...?

EBAY...no joke.

They usually end up on ebay in big lots, divided into categories. I'm sure the top dollar knives end up in some TSA agent's pocket, though.

This past summer, I flew with my family, and was going to ship a box priority mail to my sister-in-law's house. I left without having had time to ship it. First day there, I convinced my wife I needed to make a run and ended up buying a cheap gas-station knife, and a tiny Gerber multi-tool at a Target.

Shipping my own knives would have been a tad more expensive, as I would have had to insure the box for $1000, to cover the knives I intended to ship!

Hey, it was for almost 2 weeks. I had to have my good knives. :p

Your ideas is not so nuts. Just printed out two paid labels in advance to send my knife where I'm headed so I don't have to pay for a checked bag just so I can have my knife. Feel naked without one.

Being without a knife sucks, but I also HATE having to check a bag....even heard some horror stories on here and on another forum where knives have gone missing from checked bags due to sticky fingered TSA agents or baggage handlers. Mailing a knife to your destination seems a pretty good idea, though I've never tried it myself. I have bought a knife while on vacation before, and stashed it in a family member's checked bag back home. The important thing is to be aware of the laws where you're going. I've vacationed in Mexico the past couple summers and haven't bothered with a knife at all. As much as I hate being without one, from what I've read the knife laws over there are pretty stringent, and I think I'd hate being in Mexican jail even more. Plus, not much need for a blade when you're getting daysted on the beach!

Absolutely. I normally pack a small folder and leatherman micra on my checked bag. I actually picked up one of those leatherman no blade models with only pliers and scissors. First time I flew with it they took it out of my bag opened up all the tools and sent it back through on its own but let me keep it. My other problem lately is I have upgraded my EDC and I'm not putting a sebenza in my checked bag. So I grab something cheaper but feel naked without one of my better knives anyway.

Last trip to SF, I sent a Classic ahead to the hotel and picked it up on check-in — and brought with me an identical small padded envelope, stamped and self-addressed, for mailing it back. Work fine. Total cost about $5 in postage, as I had the envelopes already. Add $3 if not.

I go years between business trips. Normally I don't check a bag for business trips so I have to go without a knife on those trips.
My wife and I fly every year or so for fun and we always check bags so it is easy to carry a knife. The problem comes when we travel to a state with restrictive laws. I have to pull out some old small junk knife so I will be legal. I have flown occasionally for a long time and have never lost a big or had anything taken from a bag, but nevertheless I won't carry an expensive knife in checked luggage.

Ballsy. Good on ya.

No, that's just plain stupid, and criminal. Having a prohibited item, regardless of intent can get you up to an $11K civil fine. Intentionally carrying one will almost certainly get you arrested and earn more than a few visits to the relevant US District Court.
