Ever get people on the street that flip because you have a knife?

I used to work in hardware store. I had pulled out my pm2 to cut something behind the paint desk and an old lady behind the counter waiting for her paint saw and said" oh my god! Why do you have that?,..I can't believe they would let you have that! I looked her right in the eye and said " its only threatening when you go like this"...I raised it over my head like Anthony Perkins in the movie "psycho", and I made that screech shower scene noise...reet, reet, reet! The old lady left without her paint hahaha.....I hate stupid peoole

Nice. So instead of level headedly explaining it is a tool and you use it as such, you go ahead and give them a reason to say that knives are scary weapons. It's like those guys who openly carry AR's when they go fishing. "Just exercising my 2A rights, bro!" No, you're making the rest of us look like psychopaths.

No, but I live in Texas (suburban but still Texas).

What will cause people issues more here is open carry of sidearms, it’s legal as of about 4 years ago but mostly people who choose to do so in DFW are doing so for their own agenda/statement not any practical purpose. Local PDs have had more than a few issues with this.

It’s more mainstream in my county since it’s legitimately pretty rural in parts but most open carriers in Dallas/Plano etc are the people who probably shouldn’t be carrying guns at all.

I can’t imagine anyone having an issue with a knife, especially a folder, even in liberal Austin.

One thing about Mississippi is, I see people open carrying all the time, even Walmart. Never bat an eye. I contemplated open carrying my own firearm, but am looking into concealing instead for the sole reason of I don't want anyone to know what I have on me. Knives are one thing, gun is another.

I feel like that is a sensible way to handle that situation but I think a lot of “non-knife” people also find it hard to believe that a knife like my large crooked river is a practical tool for anything but homocide.

So while I think it’s good to explain that you use it as a tool and not a weapon (though some people do carry for defensive purposes), I don’t find anything wrong (depending on the situation) with a little humor and getting on with life.

Also, I do take my AR fishing but when I do I ride in on giant eagles wrapped in a “don’t tread on me flag” while wielding a Calvary sword inscribed with God bless America. ;)

I agree. Humor is great, but so is knowing your audience. Doing a Psycho joke to one of us knife people is one thing. Doing it to John q public who sees anything with an edge, including a SAK, as a weapon just gives those people more reason to think all knives should be banned.

Just my opinion.

But it wasn't to John Q Public, it was to an old lady...

I agree, but I think some people just love to be their own little judge and jury and will find
Any reason they can to argue that your “weapon” is not a tool because “you can just use scissors” or some nonsense like that.
So all I’m saying is be careful of who your teasing or where your teasing them and some people just can’t be reasoned with so you might as well have some fun :)

I don't whip out my knife on the street.

Maybe in a rescue situation or something critical like that..

Probably because it's illegal to carry any type of knife in public where I live.

:poop:

I've had to deal with cops, and knives, some as long as 10 inches, on several occasions. We all made it through without a scratch. John and Jane Q. Public? Nope. I carry a 4-1/2" fixed blade, everywhere, every day. I make no attempt at concealment, and if I need to cut something, I use use the knife and put it back. Nobody says anything. I guess they don't think it looks out of place with the mustache and goatee, black t-shirt, and jeans tucked into a pair of 16" redwood Wesco Highliners.

And besides, if they're trying to avoid eye contact, or looking at the knife, they're less likely to notice the .45 Commander in the IWB that rides behind it, and that IS concealed.

Good you appreciate stupid peoole for what they are...

I immediately heard the drone of the evening newscasters voice In my head when I read that post:

"And back here in San Antonio, Texas, a man was "subdued" by bystanders in a hardware store after the man reportedly began to have seizures and threatened an elderly lady with a knife while making screeching noises.

The man was arrested, then taken to taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and after an overnight stay will be evaluated and arraigned. The man defended his actions by saying he thought he was being funny, and that he didn't like stupid people."

More like "an individual was given a heck of a hiding by a 65 year old lady for sass. When action news contacted him in his hospital room he said owie owie owie".

Yeah, in towns it depends on whether it's worn in the open or not. Usually people aren't even concerned with pocket knives and such but wear a sheaved fixed blade knife, there will be some commenting. There's always somebody.
