so me and my dad was out doing yard work and he needed to stick a knife in the dirt and pry up a root and cut it.
he usually carries a cheapo folder and i carry a bit more high end knives
he dont see the difference in cheap and expensive knives:eek:

well this day he didnt have his knife on him and he looked at me and said "let me see your knife"
i said" for what?"
he said "i need it to cut this"
"NO" i said.
then he went on and said" why do you have so many knives if you wont use them"
i said "i do use them i open boxed, do food prep, get splinters out, sharpen pencils, things they should be used for.

anyway things like this make me mad
like if i wouldnt have ask him what for he would have stuck it in the dirt and i would freaked when he started prying up the root.
so from this point on im trying to not let people use my knife becuase of things like this
HAS ANYTHING LIKE THIS EVER HAPPEND TO YOU??

I try to avoid lending knives as much as possible. If someone doesn't see the value of carrying their own knife, they probably don't have much respect for someone else's knife. I don't care to fix/sharpen/clean my knives when someone else gets done abusing it. Certain people in certain situations I trust, the rest can fall back on their plan B.

I'll lend my knives to family or friends who I know won't break them, but never to strangers and never to short bus riding numpties.

I don't ask what they need it for anymore. I just say no. I might ask if they want me to cut something for them, although usually when someone asks for your knife they really need a screwdriver, prybar, wire cutter,etc....

i have one friend that i trust with my knife, anyone else i just say no, or hand them my leatherman

If someone needs to borrow a knife, I will ask them what they need it for before I hand it to them. I won't hand them the locking folder clipped to my pocket though. I will usually hand them my $16 swiss army knife. It usually had a tool on there that is more appropriate for the job anyways.

If all I have on me is a "good" knife and someone asks if I have one to borrow, I simply answer, "no".

I do NOT let anyone use my knives, my ex girl who lives with me is always asking "let me see one of your knives" so I found an old cheap knife that I let her use. I keep it sharp for her too, and she understands why I won't let her use my good ones.

If you don't want to lend a knife to someone, offer to make the cut for them.

If the intended use is fitting for a good knife, I'll let people use mine. I've loaned out my $500 EDC customs to all sorts of people for things such as cutting up their lunch, removing splinters, etc. Cardboard is one thing I don't use my knives for. Use scissors or a box cutter for paper.

I have given my wife a knife to use now and then. Generally knives which I for one reason or another don't care for very much. Or which I really do want to test for "hard use".

I rarely lend my knives out, my roommate and I were out hiking and when we got back to the car the tire was flat. We changed it and found a big hunk of metal in the tread. He asked to barrow my knife and when I gave it to him he started prying the chunk out of the already flat tire. I freaked out and said what good is that going to do, he said I just want to see what it is. Either way it wouldn't help. No more loaning knives to anyone but a select few who know better.

Stelth has hit the nail right on the head. I had someone use one of my good knives and they broke the blade because they were using it to pry something. They didn't even apologize. So now I just say no or cut it for them.

My friend and I where sitting in his grage with his dad. He was giong to pry apart some metal and ooked at both of us and asked "Can I borrow your knife" we looked at eachother and neather made a move to hand the man the knife. He looked up and asked the same question " Why do you carry knives if you dont use them"

Simply people who dont buy quality blades do not appreciate them.

I make it a rule never to loan anything sharp to idiots (a.k.a. people who ask to borrow knives, axes, etc.). Politicians excepted, providing they sign a waiver.

I've never had someone ask for my knife when I didn't have a box cutter on me, but I'd imagine my response would be:

-nice knife: no, and politely explain why
-cheapo tenacious or skyline: yes

If they're just asking to see/admire it, sure, if they're cool.

This is how I usually go about it.
