Ever stopped someone and asked what they're carrying?

As it was said in a TV ad I saw a few weeks ago:
"We have so many friends on Facebook that we need a new word for the real ones..."

I am 36 and do not feel THAT old, but back when I was young we had no mobiles, internet, social networks and stuff.
We went out on the street to our buddys after breakfast, went whereever we liked with no one knowing where or able to reach us, and got back when it was dark outside, and that was totally normal behaviour.

And every boy above the age of 7 or 8 years ALWAYS had his pocket knife with him (and most of the girls too), and we never got hurt badly either.

Oh well, enough rambling ... good old times *sighs*

As for the OT: If I notice anything interesting about anyone (a pocket clip, a cool bag, a nice smile, whatever) I ask them about it! Got some pretty awesome responses, but some nice ones too!
I say: Living in a city with a few million people in it does not mean you have to be ducking and uninterested about another human being!
If we all were there would be no human race in a few generations ;)

Mr. Nal0n, sir, I like the way you think

Went to pick up my order of contacts from the eye place in Costco and the guy had a very interesting looking clip sticking out of his right pocket. Hawaii is a casual place, and lots of people carry knives so I asked him what was he carrying. What he pulled out was a one-off Ken Onion! Ken lives here in Hawaii and this guy knows him and bought directly from Ken himself. He said he actually uses it to open cartons, and brake down boxes. Awesomeness! He also voluntarily showed me the strider he carries for "questionable" jobs where he wouldn't want to use the Onion. I don't blame him either. When asked, I showed him my edc- a regular Sebbie that was met with an approving nod. Fun days in Costco.

Sweet! And good to see another local here. A friend of a close friend of mine is Ken's niece. Small world!

I do this fairly often. I'm polite about it and try not to be weird. If I think somebody will react badly I don't ask, but everyone I have asked has been very cool about it. A lot of times we'll have a brief conversation about knives, which is always fun. I work in retail, and a lot of my customers have clips or sheaths attached. Many times they'll pull out what they're carrying and we'll compare pieces; sometimes I get to check out some neat autos that military folks are carrying, or some such. One recurring customer I've helped trips out everytime I tell him what's in his pocket based solely on the clip I see. :D

What's up 'Io- Nice to see another 808 in da house too. You're a friend of his niece? Whats the chances of that! In keeping with the theme, and so we can talk story little bit, whatcha got in your pocket there? Me? As mentioned, I still have that trusty 'ol sebenza on me. But just today the dude in the brown truck dropped off a ZT0560 blackwash that might just bump the sebenza, for a little while at least. This is one sweet knife with a great drop point blade, beautiful Elmax with a cool blackwash finish and crazy smooth flipping action. I have a Brous Division black acidwash that's supposed to have one of the smoothest flipping action around, but it's got nothing on this ZT.

Howzit! Nice choices, braddah. As for me, I had my BK14 in my front right pocket and my Case jumbo stockman in CV. My ZT0350 stayed home today. And no, Ken's niece was friends with a good friend of mine. We all went out one night many years ago and knives came up, which is why she'd mentioned it.

Lol just got back from Houston. Native Texan living in hell frozen over that is Chicago. I've asked a few people round here about what they're packin, but always cautiously. An acquaintance of mine I ran into the other day is a firefighter and carries a recon 1. Only other "uncommon" knife I've seen was an Emerson. Most everything else has been a gas station cheapo or something you'd find at your friendly neighborhood sporting goods store. My sng always gets cautious looks. Btw, what are the knife restrictions in SA? I'm going there for a conference in April and dont want to bring anything illegal.

Haha good to hear from another Texan! Yeah, I have some family in Chicago and my wife jokes that she would die of hypothermia up there

Anyways, that's a really good question. I'm not familiar with SA law but last I heard supposedly any locking folding knife is illegal, but you can carry a fixed blade. Weird, but I could be totally wrong. Can we get 91wm6 in to sound off on this topic? I know he mentioned how ridiculous knife restrictions are in San Antonio. Let's see what he says...

I talked to someone a couple times.
One of which, he had a Gerber fixed blade hooked to the breast pocket of his overalls.
Come to find out, it was his beater because he wants to leave his Benchmades in good shape.

Another time, someone I was helping at work had a SOG Twitch 2 out
So I said: "is that a Twitch 2?" Obviously he said yes.
We talked a bit and come to find out he has a bunch of Loveless fixed blades.

Funny - I've actually had two in two days. I was waiting for the lightrail after I got off of work, and spotted a Spyderco clip in a cop's front right pocket. I inquired, and he pulled out a Yojimbo! He was even as excited as I was about the upcoming S90V sprint.

Then, just yesterday, I spotted a co-worker helping a guy, and I noticed what looked like a benchmade clip in his pocket. I lingered a little and waited for a lull, and butted in to ask which benchmade he was carrying.

He proceeds to pull out a...
CRKT M16. Sigh.
But, much to my surprise, he followed that up with a Spydero Harpy, fully serrated and beaten all to hell. All three of us had a nice chat for a few minutes. Probably won't ever happen again, with my track record this far.

All the time. One time i met this guy and we had both gotten a new knife that day. The funny thing was that even though we were carrying our new knives, our usual ddc knives were the same lol

It's neat to see people edcing their knives, but I tend to only ask people when they're carrying something that looks like more than a gas station or mall ninja knife. I don't need to see an all blacked out serrated tanto, just not my thing.
If it's something else I may ask. Maybe they're a knife nut too.

Several times, when I saw a pocket clip, some of the best knife conversations I've had were with total strangers.

On occasion I'll see somebody carrying but I'll only ask if I can't tell what it is.

So far all ive seen are some spydies and kershaws.

I love scoping people out to see if they have a blade on them. I guess I'm obsessed. =)

Same, Its quite easy around the base to know what people carry because they generally get it from the NEX.

That's tight haha. Cool to have a copper carrying a Yojimbo!

And which knife might that be?

Good to know! Ever had people ask you?

Hell yeah I have every time I notice a pocket clip I inquire there is nothing better and than a spur of the moment knife conversation with a fellow knife person

Talking to a guy at a party the other day noticed he had a knife clipped to his pocket and surprisingly it was an S30v blur. Also had a case knife with a pretty beat up edge on it.

All the time, if it's visible or being used I'll inquire. I have even had conversations with law enforce about their hand guns. I have asked why they prefer one model over another, or if they had any choice.

I tend to avoid asking strangers about their knives. Acquiantances however are fair game. Unfortunately when I ask my friends and co workers to show me their knives, they tend to be packing either Gerbers and other flea-market crap or Leathermans. As much as I am interested in knowing what other people carry, I hate having to feign excitement when they pull out the knife they bought at the local made in china mart.

I completely agree! I know not everyone carrying is a certified knife but, but it's great when you run into one.

That's a great knife. He must know a thing or two, huh?

Honestly, I wouldn't like a complete stranger coming up to me to ask about my knife (or about a book I'm reading or about anything at all, really). I like to stay out of people's personal space, and to keep them out of mine.

I'm not too fond of starting conversations at stores or anything like that. When I'm at the gym or the range and some bloke I don't know keeps trying to talk to me I get pissed off . I'm always very polite, but I thoroughly enjoy being left alone.

I rarely see anyone carrying a name brand knife but I have asked a few friends what they were carrying. Or actually I walked up and pulled the knife out of their pockets to look at it. My brother in law was carrying a Kershaw Leek, and another acquaintance of mine was carrying a Benchmade Ares. Maybe this would not be acceptable behavior in all situations but was not a problem with these 2 people.
