Not that I have a pocket knife equipped with a glass breaker but surely you dont mean to imply, that anybody would try to break glass with the glass breaker on a pocket knife with the blade in the opened position?

Why woyld they be cut using a glass breaker on a knife with the blade in the closed position?

I have never had to break a car window so I have to ask this question. I am not trying to be a smart ass - I just don’t know......
What does a carbide glass breaker do better than say the butt end of my ti Military? The fine tip of the little nub carbide breaker - I get that. Is it the hardness of the tip? What makes those little things work?
Thx in advance.

The more pointy and hard the material, the better it works as a glass breaker.

Possible, but not super likely with the tempered glass on car windows.

It’s definitely the hardness. Same reason a piece of ceramic from a spark plug will do the trick so easily. I’ve seen a hammer bounce off a car window before.

Over 30 years in automotive industry.
Popped more glass than your local LEO Dept and EMT crew combined.

Slamming your knife in hand into the window will cover you with bits of glass.
The slivers are sharp.
Tempered glass produces slivers when it shatters that will end up in your hand.

Ask me how I know.

That's why we use spring loaded glass Puch tools.
Be safe.
Use the correct tool for the job.

Ive managed to break a few windows.
With the glass breakers Ive used, you dont need to be slamming your hand/knife into the window.
As I describe in my post above, it doesnt take much force at all.
(also mentioned; the YT vids with thieves breaking car windows with no effort at all using spark plugs).
Right tool, yes, but equally important the right technique.

Its your hand, not mine. ;)
I was simply giving you some advice, taken from ALOT of experience.

You can break a window with a crescent wrench too, but it isn't the correct tool for the job.
Gloves and a propper spring punch take much less effort, is much safer, and it's how the pros do it.

Many times knives try to be too many things at once, sometimes designed by folks with great intentions, but no real world experience.

Im merely saying that with the right tool, you dont need to be 'slamming your hand into the window.'

Something that seems to be missed here is a good hardened breaker can also be used as a scribe to scratch break lines just like any glass cutter. Could possibly be used in situations where taking a hard swing in not possible and less pressure is required to break. Worth testing, I will see if I can find some glass to try it on.

A few years ago my mother bought me some peice of crap Smith and Wesson branded pot metal knife I use it to pry things open lol
The end has onenofnthose glass breakers

I was scraping a old blazer and tried it on the back window.

It destroyed the window in millisecond.

I dont reccomend it because it took me 3 hours to clean all the glass up And most of it shattered on the inside of the cab.

Yep, $15.... but you have to carry it with you and I have all kinds of stuff I already carry with me. Would rather just depend on a knife. I'm sure that getting cut using a glass breaker would be quite easy. So, some protection is in order.

I get what you are saying, and weight is important.
But...
Why do you have to always "carry it with you"?
In your car or day bag, would be good to go.
I'm always with one or both unless I plan it, then I carry accordingly .

Also, it's the size of a pen.

Because I drive my car and several motorbikes.
A Resqme keyring glass breaker would come in handy, should I be out riding and come upon an accident.
A glass breaker in my car and not on my keyring whilst riding a bike wont do me (or the person in the potential car wreck) any good.
In fact a Resqme on the keyring for when riding a bike and one in each car would not be a bad solution.

Belt and suspenders kind of thing.
Plus the Resqme glass breakers are cheap.

I work at my family's glass shop. I've broken more than I can count, but never because I had to. They don't always break easily, but when you hit the right spot, it doesn't take much force at all. As for getting cut using the breakers on a knife. That's not really a hugh concern. Modern glass is made to shatter into tiny pieces that won't normally cut you up that easily. It's a very minor cut if anything with today's auto glass. As said above go for the corners, center mass can leave you with a sore elbow and intact glass.

Resqme tools are a spring punch with a beltcutter.
