Never had to use one, but it's a nice to have.

I get what you are saying, and weight is important.
But...
Why do you have to always "carry it with you"?
In your car or day bag, would be good to go.
I'm always with one or both unless I plan it, then I carry accordingly .

Also, it's the size of a pen.

And that is precisely the kind of stuff that gets buried inside my truck and won't be able to find it if I needed it in an emergency. I actually keep a mini-sledge in my truck as part of my "tool kit" along with straps, jumper cables, and tow ropes. Plenty of stuff to break some glass if I needed to.

No, and I don't particularly like them on folders. I prefer them on fixed blades.
