Ever wish you had a beater?

I carry a Spyderco Para, ZT 303 (hell yeah, new blade) and a SAK Rucksack.

So far, I've lost/found my Spyderco, I batonned my ZT cross grain through a 2x4, and use my SAK just about everyday on some screw or wall or something.

Nope, all users here, and no, I don't loan them out, under any circumstances.

Yes my blades are scratched, and no I don't care. :D

To quote Ray Mears " Never lend your knife: A damaged knife may result in a broken friendship "

I do have a "beater" knife. I generally have a good folder in my pocket that I will not loan out to anyone (personal friends/family excluded for the most part). When I am not in school (college) I always have a BK14 on my belt or in my pocket (usually belt) that I dont mind loaning out, if they break the tip I will ask them to pay for it. if they dull it, i will just resharpen it. I will use a file to do it if I have to (had to use one on a kershaw folder a friend found....ended up being a decent knife when I got done with it), but as long as the blade isn't snapped I dont get mad.

I could care less if my blades get scratched or whatever, my BK14 has had the back of the blade pressed agains a belt sander, used to pry, etc.....

my benchmade, i dont baby, but I dont throw it around like I do the 14 either

It is definately nice having a beater when you need it

Hmmm, whatever knife you carry should be a useable knife.. no reason in carrying a safe queen if you're afraid it might get glue or tape residue or even, OMG scratched..

This

...is not the same thing as this:

As far as letting other people use it.. same thing, if you are carrying something you are afraid of letting someone else use.. you should be carrying something else..

Hi, yes this is my knife but you cant use it because I spent too much on this knife and afraid you might eff it up.. weak :)

I've adopted a policy not to have any shelf-knives in my collection - I use them all and expect them all to be able to do what I need them to do.

This does not however include abusing them. Knives are tools just like anything else. I don't hammer with my digital-calipers, and I don't turn screws with my knives but that doesn't mean that I don't use both regularly for what they were intended to do.

I do not loan my knives to people for a few reasons. The second time I had someone cut themselves badly enough that it scared me (due to their lack of familiarity both with using a knife properly and being near a sharp object), I decided not to loan tools to people who aren't smart enough to use them. I've yet to have someone break the tip off of a knife because I have yet to loan a knife to someone that I don't trust knows how to use one (and that list of people is very small).

My Para-2s, SuperLeaf, and Rake are my work-horses. I've roofed with the Para-2 (cutting shingles, running the edge of the blade across decking and hitting staples -got several chips in the edge and have since sharpened them out), and used both my S30V P2 and SuperLeaf when doing remodeling. I don't use my Small Sebenza for that type of work. But I still carry it regularly and cut things with it all the time.

In all honestly, I wouldn't loan out a beater for someone to abuse (or worse, end up in the hospital needing stitches).

My edc is my beater - spyderco Salt 1 SE. I work as a landscaper. I've dug weeds, cut copper wire even cut some aluminum siding. Tonight I cut up some veggies while making dinner. It gets around.

Where I work and play, most everyone has better knives than I do.

Tell us what you really think, mystro. Nice touch of class you add to the discussion.

Seriously. If you don't want a knife to get used don't use it. It COMPLETELY defeats the purpose of the knife. But it's YOUR knife after all and you do with it what you will.
Please don't come here complaining about how somebody actually used the knife that you let them use.

He didn't just use it, he cut himself with it. I don't think you would let someone use your knife to cut themself (obviously we can't know ahead of time, but it's not why we carry our knives is it?). I overestimated his knife handling skills and technique because he carries one himself.

And just to clear it up since this has become such a focal point of this thread:

I do NOT care if any of my knives get scratched to hell.

I DO prefer to be the first one to scratch my nice new knife, and it is something I expect to do at some point.

It's like someone else popped my new wife's cherry.

Are We Still On This?.....
Okay..
Here We Go Again....
Yes, A Knife Is A Tool. Yes, It's Meant To Be Used. But Do You Want Said Knife, Or Said Tool, To Continue To Be Usable Or Do You Want Your Best Friend You Let Borrow It To Ruin It The First Time You Lend It Out? Do You Want To Get Your Knife Back With A Blade That Is Broke And Chipped To Hell, Or Do You Want To Get It Back And Still Be Able To Use It? Dulling The Blade A Little, Getting Tape On It, Maybe Leaving A Scratch.. Okay It's A Tool, It's A User, But DESTROYING Your Property?
If You Use It And Beat The Hell Out Of It You Have No One But Yourself To Blade If You Mess It Up. But I Don't Want To Hand My Friend My Knife To Use And Get It Back In Completely Messed Up Unusable Condition. I Don't Want To Have To Spend 7+ Hours Of My Time Or $50+ Of My Money To Fix/Replace Something That Should Not Have Been Disrespected And Ruined In The First Place.

I wear a ColdSteel urban pal fully serrated neck knife to beat on. Half the serrations are broken off sombidy dropped it flat on the tip I've used it to break the lock on a file cabinet it's my pocket prybar lol.

Wow. That's pretty weird bro. I honestly hope that you are not married.

I was 100% serious and not over-emphasizing at all for the sake of stressing my point so it is weird to me that you found that an odd thing to say as it was obvious I was being sincere.

jk.

But to a lesser extent, you get my point (hopefully).

P.S. Engaged, not married. And I don't wish to talk any more about that as it has nothing to do with the original topic.

I understand what you mean. But it's still pretty lame for you to blame some one for doing something that you allowed them to do. You could have said no.

(advice from a married man, Don't ever ever ever ever let your wife hear you compare her or any part of her to a knife :D )

I didn't ALLOW him to cut himself. If it had JUST been some glue on the blade and a couple scratches I probably wouldn't have even bothered to post this thread. But those COMBINED with cutting himself were not what I thought I was loaning my knife out for. I know it was an accident but when he told me how it happened it sounded like improper knife handling. And I didn't see the glue on the blade until I got home that night so it was nesting inside the handle all night while I was working.

Am I the only one on here who feels like a hero every time I lend a knife out to someone? I haven't had a bad experience yet. In my experience, people have been respectful.

I actually was a hero once. A punk rock girl got her shoelace stuck in an escalator and I was there to cut the shoelace and save her life, well her foot anyway. Didn't even get a date out of it though :/

Keep it nice, you might want to trade it.

ill tell you what i have a butt load of good knives i mean a butt load but i carry 2 sogs on each pocket a salute and a flash 2 . 2 of the best work knives ever on smooth on serrated but i find the bigger the sog the less quality sorry i love sogs but the field pup and aura arent the greatest there goood but not like my pocket knives and i agree if your gonna carry and show off a knife have a back up when someone ask for one

I do have a beater. It is a ZT 0550. Now you typically don't think of a beater costing around $200 but I is just so solid that I have no fear using and abusing it. Not what I would do with my Sebenzas for sure.
