Every Day Carry

SD knife carry is a false sense of security. It is a license for the other person to do whatever it takes to disable you. Under any circumstances, if someone pulled a knife on me, I would break their arms and wipe the floor with them.

well then your going to break my arms with one freaking lung.

I emit a powerful and eardrum shattering scream as I launch myself at my enemy slashing and dismembering with my Spyderco Cricket .....

Oh, hang on, wait .....

We're not in Prac Tac, sorry.

I use my immense charm and fabulous good looks to get me out of potentially nasty situations.

I carry any of several. For folders I carry a BM740 Dejavoo or/and a Harsey T3 ranger. Often I carry a fixed blade with a 5 inch blade.
SD don't let anyone fool you, with training a knife can be deadlier than a gun anyday. My service in the Marine Corps provided me ample time to prove that point. If you are going to carry defensively then get some training and keep up on practice in order to maintain your effectiveness.

I would say that this is good advice. Training is imperative. You CAN kill people with knives. You could be a master of deanimation. I am not saying that is impossible. I am quick. I am 6'5" with a long reach. And after all... you see "I support the military" stickers all over the place. The Military consists of MANY trained murderers who do exactly that. Just keep in mind, when you deanimate a US citizen, unless there are BIG TIME witnesses, you will be questioned AFTER you spend time in jail.

I'm old and worn out now (five kids...they wear you down). But in my immature, youthful Marine Corps days I have been in a few bar fights. In all those cases I was carrying a knife of some sort and never once thought of taking it out. Different times. Today I still carry a blade everyday for a million mundane chores throughout the day. I don't know if I could effectively engage it in a life/ death situation but I would definetely rather have it than not. If you don't have time to get it going, what harm? If I can't get it out of my pocket I truly doubt the guy or guys I'm fighting are going to either. I, like many, carry a gun most times and that would be my obvious choice if my life or my or my family was threatened. But we hike on state preserves alot and I often find a Spyderco or similiar in my pocket. If I was being attacked and in fear of my life, hell yeah, I think a knife is better than my finger nails. I've been in and out of the martial arts seen for twenty years now but I don't think brute force or determination should ever be discounted. I like this forum and usually just read but the dialogue gets a little aggressive sometimes. The member who said he would wipe the floor with a knife wielder may be telling us the truth but he is probably not the average guy you are going to run into on the street. Most people (smart people) would haul ass if they saw a blade. I'm avoiding anything I can, and if I can't, and my life is in danger, a blade seems to me like a good weapon. People have been getting dead with them for centuries now...they seem to work. Keep the peace, Smitty

You'd have to know me to understand. Personally, I would NEVER do anything to deserve being hurt or killed...never. If someone pulled a knife on me (whatever the circumstances) they are telling me that they are willing to kill me. In my shoes, this would be an offensive stance on their part. YMMV. I have been taught to literally perceive time slower when time is of the essence. I'd say 9/10 times the person is a coward, and just scared... but there is a chance that the person is scared enough to just "go for it." I would not accept a gamble or take a chance. I may very well just RUN. I may hit them with a chair or a handful of dirt/gravel. I may use my EDC light. I may throw a wine bottle at them or a glass or soda/beer bottle(s) followed by a kick in the nuts and possibly a beating to KO, followed by a call to the police. My point is that someone wielding a knife is displaying their lack of clarity and an the exercise of unacceptable moral standards. In fact, you may have just brought a knife to a gun fight.

CCO by Colt, and some sort of folder everyday. Normally a CQC7a, or a CRKT Apache lg plain edge. But it can also be a Kershaw Lahar folder. BEST folder made under 50 bucks and probably under a C note too. keepem sharp

PS reading some of the comments here I don't know. I've never thought of carrying a knife for just s.d. Mundane tasks yea and if I suppose like someone said it is better than finger nails to have one than not. If someone is threatening me with a knife I ain't gonna stick around would be my first thought. Some how some way I would try and beat feet. If nothing else just clear some distance between me and that person so if I had my handgun on me I could bring it in to play. I don't always carry it. I have been witness to many altercations over the years and have seen some insane shit happen. I was with a buddy that got stabbed with a 5" hunting knife by a nefarious 1%'er patch holder and he lived to tell about it. I have seen a few fella's hit with glasses and that is probably worse than being stabbed imho. My point is this, most times you don't see it coming no matter what you may think. My buddy had no idea which assshole stabbed him, he said it was just an arm coming out of a crowd and whammo, solar plexus stab. This happened at the Fire Side Chat in Bath NY many moons ago. I think situational awareness is paramount and using your head in tense situations is a must. I don't know about slowing down time or anything like that but I do know you get tunnel vision when put in a high stress situation that could lead to gun play or death. That I have experienced first hand. So take all this for what it is worth. If you use a knife for s.d. you most definetly will end up probably going to jail no matter what happened until you can make bond or bail. That and your knife will be confiscated. keepem sharp

I carry my wits and my mitts as my primary defense mechanisms. I'd prefer to slam a bloke's skull into a wall rather than trying to shank him, if need be. I'm in pretty good shape, and above average size, so I don't make too easy of a mark. I carry slipjoints mostly these days, and don't entertain thoughts of using them for SD. I do carry a Busse Game Warden in my coat pocket, which I suppose would do in a pinch if the chips were really down. If I'm going somewhere I feel is dangerous, I slip a gun in my pocket.

Sal Glesser has a point "All God's critters have knives"

So should we, they come in handy for all kinds of purposes:thumbup:

The further I run from someone trying to stab me, the less effective his blade is. But when cornered, use what ya got...swing your belt like a whip! Wrap your jacket around the knife, twisting his arm in there and all. Do the unexpected. But if someone pulled a knife on me, I would not try to match him by drawing mine, I would keep both my hands free for trying to disarm him/her. The biggest weakness someone has with a knife is that it is known where their attack will come from. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that sometimes a knife is not seen until it is too late. I bounced enough and went to enough bars in college to be able to agree with this. But avoiding a fight at all costs is to avoid injury at all costs. Do not fight unless cornered (or if you can get in a good sucker punch). I have never used a knife in a fight, but I have pulled one on a couple punk kids trailing me through a parking lot late one night after work. They just turned and ran. Same reason I keep a baseball bat in my trunk. But still in that situation, it would have been "one blow per person and run" A knife is a good deterrent, better used that way than a weapon.

Do you carry every day for a bit of self defense? What is your every day personal protection knife?

Don't got one.

I carry a knife as a tool only. And have for almost 50 years.

I carry a gun for self-defense.

+1

If a knife is your only option, or you want a good SD blade, look at the ZT0400. I have been pleasantly surprised with the knife as a utility knife as well as a self-defense blade.

Beware the looks it will generate, it looks pretty brutal.

I have performed many a covert deanimation on severely hostile chocolate bars, using my serrated Spyderco Delica.

I think a knife seems like a bad self defense weapon though, especially against another weapon. I'd rather pick up a chair and swing at the guy if possible. Or throw a bicycle at him if I'm on the streets.

My EDC varies, many times a Dozier FB or a ZT folder or similar. Not for the sole purpose of self-defense as I have plenty of utility uses for them...but if needed, yes it will serve for self defense.

I like it archie. Good knife choice. You look like Sylar on Heroes :)

Training in unarmed or armed combat can make a knife a very viable tool within arms distance. I recently proved to a friend that within 10 feet he would be extremely hurt if I brought a knife to a gun fight. So it really boils down to training and your confidence. A knife can indeed be a tactical tool in the correct hands, but your average guy isnt capable. The same can be said of a firearm. If you cannot bring one to bear effectively, you better keep it up away.
