Everyday carry

"So somewhere in the VA/MD area is an SHBM underwater being carried around by a horseshoe crab."

Cobalt,

So where did you say you lost that piece......I have some leave ready to burn for a treasure hunt :D :D :D

Sorry to hear that bro, Ji

Do you all carry them, or do you risk the possibility of losing one if getting caught carrying one in a jurisdiction that does not allow, without your knowledge, like where my brother is a cop in Berkely Ca. And is a prick to me sometimes.

if a police officer takes my knife, i take down their badge number, the adress of their police station, time place and event during wich the seizing took place so i can make every possible legal effort to get it back later on.

that being said - i'm willing to miss flights and busses/trains to keep them. (you can mail them at the post office to a home adress)

i'm more afraid of it falling of its sheath while im in a car and losing track of it while using it and things like that. for those occasions - i have 2 of every knife that i carry. in the case of customs, i carry two that have the same function (slicer, prybar, chopper etc).

i have 2 hogsjtacle's, 2 basic 9's, 3 slicer customs, a hogsh and soon a hogfbm (they kind of serve the same heavy chopping function).

if i lose one, i have another to fall back on :D

Ok, I do carry my two favorite busses routinely with me. One is my 8 inch custom PBF and the other is an SHBM. I carried the PBF with me at all times at Blade 2006.

As for lost knives, yes, I have lost knives. In fact I have lost an SHBM in a very large local river, in very shallow water (5ft), but no matter how much I looked the water was to murky and the bottom was so soft that it could have swallowed up the knife.

So somewhere in the VA/MD area is an SHBM underwater being carried around by a horseshoe crab.

I am more carefull, but if you carry, you do risk loosing it.

seriously... if you could find that, though rust ridden and useless as a knife - you could always claim the warrantee on it :D

Will you risk losing your precious infi for personal protection

I don't carry knives for strictly personal protection. That would be worst case scenario. (I usually only EDC my GW)
If you're looking for protection, get pepper spray. I just had a coversation with my buddy about this tonight. He always carries a can of FOX 5.3 pepper spray w/ him. Just a few weeks ago he tried to break up a fight between two guys and ended up getting punched by one of the two fighting, so he gave him a shot of pepper spray in the eyes. That guy was down for the count and hurtin' for the next eight hours.
Pepper spray is a GREAT non-lethal alternative. And it packs a HELL-OF-A punch!

Generally speaking, if a LEO takes your knife it's for destruction and done in an attempt to avoid arresting you. If the LEO were to follow the letter of the law, he would have to arrest you, instead the ofc. is using his/her discretion by just taking your knife.

I'd doubt you'd ever get your piece back regardless of how much of the details you recorded at the scene. And you also might risk the LEO not being so discretionary.

YMMV, but that's been my experience.

I'm not telling any of you guys where I lost it:eek: . Someone might just drain all the local rivers or something to get it.

edited to add the following:

Busse use to sell the SHBM's with several different kydex sheaths. Two of the three had security snaps around the handle of the knife to keep it from falling out. The third sheath was all kydex and had a piece of it folded over next to the handle for fitting in a belt. It had no snaps and was fairly secure. Well, this sheath is very confortable when wearing an SHBM in a semi concealable way, but if you happen to do any jerking motion the knife will pop out. Which is what happened, I still have the sheath, but the SHBM went flying out of it's sheath while I was on a boat at speed hitting waves. I should have had one of the other sheaths. Oh well. .

Rust developes really slowly on this steel so it would not take much work to remove the rust and it would be good as new

If you really want to EDC a fixed blade, a horizontal carry sheath might be in order (blade runs along the same direction as your belt, instead of up and down).

IIRC, Leatherman and Gundy were cooking up something special for a NO/Camp Tramp-sized blade. Skunk mentioned something recently - the "Bad Ass" - which I think was this project. Been wanting to ask Dwayne if he might cook up a horizontal sheath for the Game Warden.

Its not on my person, but my Mud razor lives in my day pack, which I take almost everywhere. When out bush its on my belt and when at army its on my webbing. Always close at hand.

Friends don't let friends buy Blocks.

Exactly :D

As for you Cobalt.... 5 feet of water?!? Are you freakin' kidding me?!? DUDE!!! I would've been doing an underwater hand stand looking for that knife. To let a freakin' $600 sit in 5 feet of water? I want your job man...

5 feet of water... sheesh   :grumpy: :thumbdn: ;)

I don't have a magnet on hand, but if INFI is magnetic, get one of those magnets the size of a brick with some rope and troll the river in the area. You may get lucky and good luck :)

The main reason I think people are scared of knives is because they should be! To wear a 6 inch blade or larger on your belt in town is way too much for anything you might need to cut, they see it as a weapon then not a tool. I would not want people wearing them around me because I know they want it for protection. If you want real protection carry a baseball bat. that will take out anyone with any knife and isnt too scary just looks dumb:D

Are you seriously posting this material on a knife discussion board? Consider your audience.

Taking a baseball bat to a knife fight is pretty inane. Unless you're Barry Bonds, you'll wind up cut and/or dead.

Here's the smallest thing I'll take to a knife fight. YMMV.

If I'm around town amongst the sheeple, I usually carry my GW in my pocket. It's such an innocent looking knife, that it rarely gets a second look when I use it, unlike some of my "tactical" folders. If I go upstate Maine, most anything goes and I have no problems wearing a 7" blade out on a hike. If I'm hiking in Southern Maine (aka Northern Massachusetts) then my larger blades wiill stay in my pack.

I agree, I carry an Ark around town and nobody looks twice. They seem to care more about drunks and drugs then people mind their own business. Sometimes I get stopped cause they like the "pretty handle".

Don't you think I did all that. I had other people searching as well. It dissapeared.

...and in case you are wondering the 2.5" limit is exempted for certain professions , police, coroners, and for others while they are actually performing their duties: conductors, baggagemen, messengers, drivers, watchmen....

and I sometimes carry a skeleton key at work...but then again I'm immune...:)

I carry what I want... when and where I want. If somthing were to happen my attitude as of late would take me to jail before I handed over anything. Know your local laws... and 95% of the time if a cop takes a blade from you then he's taking it home... I know I'm guilty of it myself... but that's what the Sheriff told us to do at the time... he had 4 or 5 large rubbermaid trashcans full of various knives from his years in office... when he ran out of room he told us to keep them or toss them.

that really is the problem...I know a fellow officer who busted some guy for weed, and the guy had a nice spyderco on him, so he thought he'd be nice and inventory it for the guy (that way he could theoretically get it back) - the desk Sgt. saw the inventory and made him tack the weapon charge on...he would have been better off if the copper tossed it ...
