Everyone's latest acquisitions!

A couple of interesting things have come in recently, most notably the Hudson Bay knife from David Mary. I know this thread likes photos, but my photo posting is constrained right now, so you will just have to let your imaginations run wild. The easiest, obvious thing to say is “This is a knoife”. I look forward to slicing up some polar bear steaks in the not-too-distant future. I have not seen pictures of any of the eleven others that should be in circulation now, but I assume that at least a couple will surface soon, if they have not already.
Next is a pretty decent flea market find at the Washington County fairgrounds. This is a pretty big flea market, too big for me to see everything in a couple of hours. Anyway, I recognized the green handle through a dirty pane of glass, peeking out from under a pile of nondescript knives. The vendor pulled it out and one look confirmed my suspicion: a Condor Bushcraft Parang with a $30.00 price tag. I have one already, so I was not too interested. Before I could even think about making an offer, the vendor jumped all over me: “How does twenty bucks sound?”
“Mister, you drive a hard bargain” is what I would have said had I stopped to think about it for even a second. But I had my wallet out before he finished his sentence.

Is this the replacement one?? Did it come out exactly as you wanted?

Yes, I asked if they could find one of the remaining knives without a glaring flaw to exchange. Head of Customer Relations found a single one without visible defect and sent it to me. Great customer service. No flaws on either side. I was going to add this to my thread but it was already closed. Bottom line: a great outcome.

I very much appreciated your comments on my thread, Quiet. FYI, I've been looking for a knife with high quality meteorite scales for 14 years. Almost bouught a custom, but it had other issues. I talked to some custom makers, but finding the kind of jeweler-quality meteorite slabs and using them was too much of a hurdle. So now onward to my next grail.

Two new blades showed up in the mail just yesterday. One is a Lucca billhook from Angelo B. I had been looking for a Rinaldi in the same pattern from Baryonyx, but it was out of stock whenever I looked. Baryonyx carries Angelo B. as well, but I do not recall seeing this pattern there. The Angelo B. billhook closely resembles the Rinaldi, with similar stacked leather handles with a metal hook on the end, whether to hang the tool on a belt loop or to keep it in your hand I do not know. It comes in the same manganese spring steel as the Rinaldi blades, and might well have come from the same factory by all appearances.

The machete uses the same steel, and looks in profile like a 14” bolo from Tramontina or Imacasa. The blade is about half again as thick, and weighs about 50% more than its Latin American counterparts. The extra half a pound is immediately obvious, and the blade lacks the nimbleness of the Latins. It might be expected to chop better, which remains to be seen.

This is fantastic news, my friend. I know how it is to find something you've been searching a very long time for, only to have it flawed in some way. In some cases, the flaw was minor and I was able to still obtain the thing in question and still be happy to have it, others, entirely unacceptable. I am glad that things worked out for you, this is a beautiful piece and clearly destined to be a source of joy for you!
