Everything is tIhrough trial and error, sharpening steel.

Thanks fellas, that's what I wanted to hear. I can't wait to get proficient on it once I get it. I feel I have put my due time in by hand and can now justify moving up.

I was so mad after I posted that LMAO.

If I had it to do over again, I would just buy the kalamazoo. Buy once, cry once. I really wish I had picked up the 1x42 to start out with. I buy my belts from supergrit.com and leevalley.com.

230, I think you can still edit it. If you click edit on post #1 you should have that option to change it IIRC.

I tried, the title is fixed, I can just edit the post. I don't care really, but its the equivalent to walking into a crowded room about to tell the group inside the people something and you fall in front of the podium lol.

I've been looking at sharpmaker for a while, I wasn't looking into re profiling edges. Basicaly I need something easy to use and idiot proof. Actually idiot proof is the most important factor after the price. And something that will make the knife look nice and clean after I'm done. Just how bad was the sharp maker on Busses?

Very very time consuming, very very very. If your Busse isn't ground to the right degrees, its going to take you FOREVER to sharpen it.

If you want something idiot proof, buy an edge pro.

Do appreciate all the advise
Not falling on deaf ears m8.

the edge pro is actually better on busse's then it is on other steels. the 120 stone takes off more metal per pass then it does for something like bg42 at the same hardness, because busse has a more mooshy steel matrix. bg42 is like a fine ceramic vs. busse's sandstone, where stones ring and skid across bg42 they bite in and drag across INFI.. same hardness, totally different feel when sharpening.

still - edge pro is slow going if your taking off a lot of metal. if your trying to drop a 30 degree edge (per side, 60 included angle) down to 16 degree's and the main grind is made to be obtuse and robust, you'll be spending anywhere from 2-10 hours just grinding it down. on thinner more acute blades it will be on the lower end of the time scale.

either way, reprofiling with hand stones is slooooooow.

I will agree with you that INFI isn't as bad on an EP as certain other steels. Diamonds still cut better than any water stone and a belt cuts even faster than that.

It's a great system, but it's really not for me.

I think i'd have a harder time using those stones as a file. Then again, I don't like thinking about sharpening an axe without a belt sander.

on maintenance forum, everyone says to stay away from the HF. just throwing that in.

They work, as does the similar grizzly grinder, they aren't what i'd consider "good" tools, but they're "good enough". It's the reason I'm upgrading to the kalamazoo. A lot of people aren't like us, being willing to spend 100's of dollars keeping their knives that cost 100's of dollars sharp.

well, i did see many posts from different guys there saying how they wouldn't use a HF if it were the only thing they had. from what i read, you are better off with anything other than the HF. I think it was due to the way the belt doesn't stay perfectly in line, and a certain chatter that you feel if you push on the platen? i don't remember, but it was a big thing over there, everyone says go with the Kalamazoo, or obviously something better if you can afford it. just what i remember reading.....

The HF is far from perfect. It has a lot of problems and is certainly a CHEAP tool. Mine fell apart...dead.

I upgraded to the kalamazoo. With that said, the HF is what brought me to the 1SM and the 1SM will lead to better eventually. Going from the HF to the 1SM was like going from a busted up old truck to a new Benz. The HF still got the job done even with the problems. That old thing was like an extension of my hand. I was better with that then the 1SM until I became familiar with the new set up. Different feel and my 1SM is silky smooth and perfectly aligned.

I seuggest the 1SM but if a budget is a factor the HF WILL do the job WELL. You just have to be used to its quirks.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter anyhow.
