Everything is tIhrough trial and error, sharpening steel.

well, i did see many posts from different guys there saying how they wouldn't use a HF if it were the only thing they had. from what i read, you are better off with anything other than the HF. I think it was due to the way the belt doesn't stay perfectly in line, and a certain chatter that you feel if you push on the platen? i don't remember, but it was a big thing over there, everyone says go with the Kalamazoo, or obviously something better if you can afford it. just what i remember reading.....

I'm quite happy with mine, and think that it represents good value for the money. Mine does not seem to have any tracking problem, but does chatter badly if you grind against the platen.

The chatter against the platen was absurd. I remember stripping my ASH 1 and trying to satin finish it against the platen and I had ridiculous chatter marks across the entire blade. Hopefully chatter wont be an issue with the kalamazoo.

Is that probably my best option for picking one up or is it elsewhere cheaper?

Not sure, shop around:D I have ordered other stuff there with great luck. I ordered mine from amazon and probably over paid.

No chatter here. You will love it with your cork belts. The only downfall is the platen is wider than the 1 inch belt (you could fix that ). So you can probably see how that could hinder certain things if you try to finish the flat real close the handle slabs. Handles off no problems that I have run into.

Awesome!

It sucks being limited to only grinding convex ground knives or saber to convex. I'd love to be able to finish some flat ground knives. On the cheapo sander, it would destroy them with chatter if i ground against the platen.

I haven't had an problems putting a convex edge on a full flat ground knife. You just have to use a new belt that isn't stretched out and use light pressure. I use a cheap 1x30 harbor freight sander.

Not putting a convex edge on a flat ground knife, I can put a convex edge on any knife. I mean taking a flat ground knife and grinding at the primary grind to give it a satin finish while maintaining a primary flat grind. The knife in my original post is a flat ground FBM LE with a convex edge I gave it.
