Excuses You Have Made to Purchase a Knife?

Digging through my collection, I pulled out my Case USMC Copperlock, and had to crack a grin. I bought this knife right before a trip to Amarillo, Texas. The excuse I made (to myself) is that I would be visitig the world-famous "Big Texan" steakhouse and wanted the right knife to cut my steak. Lame..I know, but even at the time I had to smile a bit at my thin excuse. To this day, I carry that knife anytime I am going to Amarillo or any steak restaurant.

So, I am curious...what are some of the excuses you have made...whether to yourself, the wife, husband, significant other family etc, to make a purchase? I figure we could have fun with this one.

The excuse I've made the most is that they're a limited item(one run) and if I don't get one now I'll never be able to, haha. They were modern knife purchases, but with how those Northwoods are I'm sure some of you can relate.

One excuse I use, (if it fits the situation), is that the price is too good to pass up. Love to find a knife I like, and the price is just unbeatable. Then, even if the plan was not for buying a knife, it happens :)

Well, usually the excuse is, "I don't have one like that."

But I do mind the time that I bought a specific knife to take to a wedding of a friend's son. Or at least that's what I told myself at the time.

My wife doesn't really know how many knives I have so new ones get added in to the collection all the time. But if for some reason she ever questions where a new one comes from I plan on using the "I just found this one. I had been looking for it for a while." Not really lying to her by telling her that.

I did use the "I need a good camp knife" this past summer when I got my BK2.

Normally “man, that combination of blades would be perfect to carry!”

Same here. I carry a knife for a while, I wish it had different feature, then I buy a new knife with that feature, carry it for a while, wish it had... on and on forever.

My excuse is usually telling myself "that's a good deal".

As a result I have a tackle box with tons of old and somewhat old user knives (in good shape, not junkers) that were mostly around $30 a piece or less.

Excuses aside there are many good knives no longer produced that you can find in the sub $30 range, and so the pile grows larger.

Once I was visiting family and flew home with carry on only, so I went to a hardware store and bought a knife, just to have one, for a week. I gave it to my brother on the way to airport for my flight home. I guess "just because" is as good a reason as any other.

"I only bought it because I knew I could sell it for more than I paid for it."

I never said how long I might have to hold on to it to accomplish that. :D

True story: "We're just passing through and only stopping for a short time and this place is a Case Platinum Dealer and it'll be a long time before we get back here and look at all these knives and I just have to take one with me!" (Got a Wharncliffe mini trapper. ;) )

Also: "Oh, I don't have one of these (pattern, handle material, handle color, etc.) yet!" (That one works to convince me even better than it works on my wife.)

I have definitely done this!

Let’s see: need one, need one of those, want one of those, rust proof, for diving, good ergonomics, they aren’t going to make these anymore, grail knife, oooh - that’s cool, has everything I want, has everything I need, fits my pockets, fits my pockets better, it’s on sale!, birthday, Christmas, anniversary, birthday, anniversary, Christmas ....

The only valid excuse Ive ever used is for the forum knives since 2010.
I had to buy it because if didnt buy it Id miss out.
Every other excuse had about as much chance as a snowball in hell. As do I at the moment.
