Excuses You Have Made to Purchase a Knife?

With me, it's excuses I have to make to myself. My wife is very tolerant of my knife collecting. Although, I don't make conversation about how much I've spent over the years...
My excuses for the last couple I've bought. "I've always wanted one of those, at that price, I can't let it get away" or "those are going to go fast, I better buy it now".

Well.. Since my wife supports my knife hobby there is no need for excuses.. This Christmas she got me 3 old slippies.. Enabler she is!!!:pJohn:D

I think : won't see another like zis before long if ever, but most of time I wait for too long and, yes, gone, she's gone. :(

I may as well post here since I just ordered yet another GEC in two weeks.

For me the expense seems high thinking about knives as a tool, but it pays off in dividends with the excitement I feel waiting for the mailman to come and the everlasting excitement of pulling these beauties out of the drawer and dropping them in my pocket.

This is stress relief in some ways for me and that itself is priceless.

With GECs you really don't need an excuse, the truth will do: buy now or miss out.

I had my coffee house acrylic saddle trapper on Christmas, and my son-in-law saw the "1 of 25" etch on the blade and said,
"Wow, they only made 25 of these!? Holy smack!"

The only excuse I've ever used so far has been: I can afford that.

That's the only one I need.

Haven't got a new knife in awhile and it's a fair price...thus the accumulation continues :)

For a while I always said "it'll make a great first knife for Luke". Luke is my son and he has about thirty or so "first" knives.

My wife has given up since then so there's no more excuses as long as I don't go too crazy with the knife budget. There are times when I do, but as they saying goes..."it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"...

"could always be good trade fodder for something else if you dont like it"

too often do I get struck with that is neat I must have it when I look at something. leading to impulse purchases. now i tend to book mark knives for weeks and weeks while deciding. i do this with watches as well. two weeks is usually all it takes. Look at it every day and see if I still want it.

I never had to make excuses to someone else, just myself. My early excuses (reasons) were nothing more than I wanted it. Later, it was that I was filling a niche in my collection. Finally, I ran out of excuses to myself and just stopped buying more knives.

My excuse is usually telling myself "that's a good deal".
...
Variations on the "good deal" excuse are what I use to convince myself.
1) Many times I've added "just one more" knife to an order only because if I spend $X more I'll get free shipping. (Never mind that I'm often spending $12-15 to save myself an $8 S&H charge.)
2) Sometimes I'll make a knife order even when I haven't "saved up the budget" for it yet because "20% off the entire order is SUCH a good deal."

One other type of excuse I sometimes make to myself (and am ashamed of my pettiness :() is that I should be able to buy this knife (or these knives) because my wife spends on her hobbies orders of magnitude more money than I spend on mine.

I didn't buy something else for about this price, so I'm actually getting it for free!
Oh yeah, every Saturday when I come home from buying groceries, I look at the (questionable) report of how much I saved at the store that day, and think to myself, "Shoot, I could fund a new GEC every month or so just from my incredible shopping skills on Saturday!" (So far, I just THINK that kind of stuff, but it's sometimes a tempting excuse to act upon.)

I don´t need any excuses... She doesn´t care about my collection. I have too many traditionals so I could not carry them to a good well used end.

The only question could be about a new small package... "Did you almost recieve a new one knife?!" ... but I didn´t for too long. I only recieved two knives - to be honest.

I have definitely done this!

I kinda did that with a guitar.
Flew down to Florida to spend a week with inlaws who had a condo rented.

By day 2, couldn’t stand it, so hit the pawn shops and found a decent player.

Had them bring it home in their car.

Also bought a cheap kitchen knife for fishing and made a cardboard and duct tape pocket sheath for it.
