Exhorbitant Shipping

If a person can't figure out the final cost of an item (price+shipping+tax or what have you), they ought not be out wasting money.

Not everyone can be mastered and successful at everything like you. I guess I need to go back to school to learn these "additions" you keep speaking of...

Anyways I saw he has changed many of his auctions to the same format. People are bidding on items that were previously not selling. Some kind of Ebay psychology method or something. Like pricing something at 19.99 vs. $20.

Figuring out an exact final cost of an item, including shipping, is not difficult. The internet can be a wonderful tool.

I don't know why you even felt the need to make a thread about it honestly.

Just something I wanted to discuss. I thought that's what this forum was for? Are any of these threads "needed" per say. It's just a bunch of people talking about knives as a hobby generally speaking.

So I'm sure we've all come across sellers who overcharge for shipping. It's not uncommon and doesn't usually bother me too much if it's not unreasonably over cost. Anyways I recently came across a knife selling on a common auction site (won't post any links as I recently learned this is against BF rules). The bidding is starting at $0.99. I thought I'd make a bid as no one has bid yet. Then I looked at the shipping charges. The seller is asking $580.00 for shipping. Basically he's covering the whole cost of the sale in shipping alone. Haven't seen this maneuver before, pretty much a _____ move IMO. Thoughts?

You mention no knives. You talk about high shipping charges for items....but not sold here. Don't like the cost of something, don't buy it. Simple.

Read it again. I think you missed the part 'knife' related.

Yup I Did. It didn't happen here and it is Still not hard to figure out

Sure thing, thanks for all your great advice. You've been supremely helpful.

Just let it go man. There are always a few people like him on every forum, don't waste any more time.

For what it's worth I don't spend much time on ebay and didn't even realize this was a selling tactic so the thread is informative.

Trying ordering some special parts from a huge company the starts with a G and ends in an E. They have charged shipping based on the price of the item, not the weight or size of the box needed. $1,000 part that weighs a quarter ounce? That will be $250 in shipping... can shipping insurance really account for that?

Ya I didn't know about it either, and since he was selling knives I thought this might be a worthwhile place to bring it up. Some people had to come in and take a dump, but that's their right to do so. But ya I've already let it go.

Another possibility is that the seller mistyped the shipping fee. May have intended $5.80 and missed a decimal point, i.e. came out as $580.

It's happened to me before. I intended to charge $2.50 USPS First Class and fat-fingered in $250. None the wiser until a buyer sent me a message.

One way to find out is message the seller. He'll either appreciate the heads up on his typo... or ... he'll confirm that shipping is indeed $580

No, he's doing most of his knife auctions with this new format. $1 beginning bid, with 580.00 or 799.00 shipping.

On places like E-bay they do it to beat E-bay out of their fees. You do not pay fees on shipping. I think it's a bs move....................

The final ebay fees cover the total cost, shipping included. At least it used to not long ago. Something have changed at some point I guess.

I really hate that scam. One website I buy from uses that system, but they correct for tiny lightweight items, so I forgive them.

On the other hand, a lot of people on the internet are also wonderful tools. :p

Isn't that the truth :barf:

Another thing to watch for is taxes, some sellers charge sales tax when shipping within their state and it will be noted at the bottom of shipping tab...I got hit on that once!
