Expensive knives aka safe queens?

I wonder how many of us out there who buy a $100+ knife really put them to real use? I have seen most of the people around me who just keep them to build up their collection of every worthwhile knife out there.

The ones really put to use as a knife actually should are less than 100 bucks.

Heck if I use $100+ knife for other than showing off my friends and brass about it... It needs to be damn good reason and very special circumstances. Nothing would ruin day more than lose your $150 folder when you know you cannot afford to buy replacement.

So I would only use knife in work or EDC that I know I can afford to replace if I lose one. And in current economical situation $100 is bigger money than it was before this economical situation...

all my knifes that i paid $100+ are used, especially the ZT's that i have (and will have), which are hard used...and the "crown jewel", my lg. sebenza, IS MY FISHING KNIFE...

their makers would be proud...

Fortunately, my braggard blades, Benchmades, for example, came with little bags - which will protect them from other pocket residents while I transport them to/from the liar/bragger's sofa at the range...

Seriously, I have no safe queens - I use everything!

Stainz

PS I have several $100-$150 - and one $172 knife, otherwise, everything is <$100.

I don't buy expensive knives because I can't afford them, my most expensive knife is my buck110 which I paid 30 for and I don't even EDC it just because I don't want to take a chance of scratching it.

I think it really depends on your financial situation, and this argument could be made for anything.

Why do people buy an iPhone when a freebie works just fine for calling?

Why do people drive Porsche in the city where it has no advantage over a Honda other than appeal?

So, imo, it all depends how much money you have and how much you desire it.

People still use the iPhone and EDC it, use it to make and receive calls.
People do drive the Porsche around.

But expensive knives keep staying home, at times in original boxes, never to cut anything except perhaps paper.

My $475 Strider SnG DGG IS my hard use folder, it gets used and maintained. I just got a Manix 2 S90V that I'm babying into use.

Any good knife maker or manufacture makes the knife to be used. Most custom makers take pride in their knives being used and holding up great.

People do use expensive knives.

Expensive knives over $100? Look around this forum, MANY people use knives well over $100, just look at the EDC thread and you will see most people carry.

'Expensive' is a pretty personal word. You shouldnt judge others by what you might do, just look anywhere on this forum. People edc from spydercos, benchmades, to crk and customs.

Not for me. I'll use my Sebenza to cut anything.

+1

I put my ZT0300 to use. Hard if need be. I bought it to use and I'm gonna use it. I paid extra for all the features that make it a great hard-use knife and I'll use it as intended. Not for bragging rights and comparing specs. If I had a lot of disposable income, then I'd buy multiples of the ZT's and other high-end knives for a safe (which I could afford then) but I'd get at least one to use.

I carry and use a knife I paid $900 for....

I wear a Rolex every day that gets all kinds of scratches. See my sig line.

Hell, I have a SNG and PT that's over $600 in knives for just the two, I know thats a drop in the bucket to some on the forums. They get used. My wife was asking me how much I have into my knives I asked her "if she really wanted to know that?" she looked at me and said No not really. The only Knife I have that don't get used is the the cheapest of all my knives but still priceless to me because my Grandpa gave it to me when I was a kid.

I use most of the knives I own. Some are custom knives that have no practical use (daggers, mammoth and stuff like that) that I won't use. But, I use anything from Chris Reeves, Microtech, Spyderco, Busse.

Just some examples. Enjoy your knives, use them!

This is what I carry every day 1/8" thick O1 steel, 6 1/2 OAL with a 3" blade.
As far as customs go it isn't very expensive at all, but it is above your $100 mark.

This what it looked liked brand new.

I have a few more custom fixed blades, none are safe queens.

The only knives I won't use are those with sentimental value.

I use one of the 54 Spydercos I have collected.
That's all I need and the rest are safe queens NIB. Couldn't buy that many just to use and the value goes way down if you do.
I've got other knives that I do use, but I collect Spyderco so I just couldn't do it if I was gonna use them. It all comes down to what the individual wants. It's their cash outlay and if they want to try everything they buy out fine. If they want them as collectors in pristine condition that's fine as well. I feel I can at some point get my money back if I need to and I'm comfortable with the probably 5000-6000 dollars worth of Spydercos in my safe. If I'd used every one and they was worth half as much I'd feel sick.
