Explain the Spyder hole to new guy

I'm a thumb guy too. The thumb pad is a full control opening method for me. Medium size hands with stubby and getting old fingers. The index finger just won't reach around the front of the knife for any blades longer than a Delica. No matter, I took to the spydie hole like a bluejay to a peanut - no need to overthink or practice.

Problem solved!

It was an ergonomics issue all along. I tried a sheepsfoot Benchmade Grip that comes with a thumb hole today. It worked amazingly and it was very intuitive for my thumbs! Didn't miss the hole or have to poke around for it, didn't get stuck half way while opening, etc. Even worked with my other fingers. I also tried a few Spyderco from the Tenacious line back to back with it - still didn't work at all, regardless of if I used the thumb, middle, or index finger flip.

After a few more tries on both, it became very clear to me that it came down to how/where the hole was placed in relation to how my hand grabs/holds the handle and how my thumb fits into it all and is able to move. The hole on the griptilian sat in a slightly different spot and had a different "track" that it followed when opening/closed vs any of the tenacious line (and any other similar Spyderco I've tried recently).

Guess I'll have to try each Spyderco in particular more extensively before I buy (unless I collect eventually... but I don't right now). Somewhat inconvenient but at least the mystery has been solved now.

I have to admit that my 550 Grip flicks open easier for my hand than any Spyderco I have tried so far. It could just be the individual knife itself. After it is opened I much prefer the Manix 2 or the PM2 ergos though. Also, I am not saying it is difficult for me to flick my Spydercos but I have to watch my hand placement and such, my Grip was intuitive for my hand.

It was the thumbhole that sold me on Spydercos. My first Spyderco was a Delica. I didn't much care for the ergonomics of that particular knife, but I thought the thumbhole was the greatest thing in knives since the invention of stainless steel. Today I ordered my sixth Spyderco.

Besides ease of opening, I like the hole over studs because it doesn't get in the way when sharpening and when cutting thick media.

Which Spyderco did you order ?

I ordered a Dice. Yes, I know it's a flipper even though it also has the thumbhole. I'm not so wed to thumbholes I won't experiment to see if something is better. It will also be my first knife with carbon fiber, titanium, a framelock, and a super steel. So I'm trying a number of new things with the Dice. Besides, I like the size and ergonomics.

I've been lusting after one of these for the past week. I think it is going on my Christmas list.

KSF has them for $137 right now- by far the lowest price I've seen. (That should be OK to post, since KSF is a BF sponsor IIRC. If not, will some kind moderator delete this post?)

Thanks a lot for that! Hopefully that will cure my knife addiction disorder for a bit. This month I have bought a Puma SGB Drop, Urban Trapper, Manix 2 Lightweight and now the Dice. Have to sell off some of my old hobby stuff to finance this now lol.

josh^ My Para1 is keeping me cured. I hope a Spyderco is the balm you need.
