05/02/2012: My son "swimming" with our stuffed orcas. My callsign (nickname) in the navy was "orca", so every time the family finds an orca plush toy, pencil eraser, post card, etc. they get it and give it to me. We now have no less than fifteen orca-related toys & knick-knacks around here.

I like this thread. :) there are a lot of good posts here! Mine is of a blue shark taken by a co-worker from a whale research vessel. I don't know how big it is, probably 6 or 8 feet long but it's a cool pic and I like sharks.

My avatar is a picture of my dog, Kirby. My girlfriend and I decided we wanted to get a small dog, and we got a tip about a mini dachshund at the local ASPCA. When we went to check it out, no one knew the first thing about it. We found another dog we liked, and when we asked about it, the folks there told us it was already going through the adoption process with someone else. We ended up going to the local animal shelter to see what they had there. When we walked into the kennel area, all the dogs were going crazy and just making a huge racket. Then we got to Kirby's cage, and he was just sitting there calmly and wagging his tail. He didn't bark one, not even a whimper. Right then and there, I said, "That's our dog."

We filled out the paperwork, and a few days later we gave Kirby a new home. I've never met a dog that was as nice or as patient as he is. I can say with full confidence that he's the best damn dog I've ever had.

I'm here at the request of Myker. :)

On September 7 of last year, tragedy struck Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a Russian hockey team playing for the KHL. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff after it failed to gain the altitude it needed to safely clear a tower mast at the end of the runway.

There were two initial survivors, a member of the flight crew (Alexander Sizov) and a member of the team (Alexander Galimov). Galimov was reported to have burns to over 90% of his body. He fought long and hard for 5 days but succumbed to his injuries. Sisov survived.

While I am a hockey fan, really up until that point it has only been towards the NHL. Never have I followed any collegiate, junior, or minor league teams. And while some NHL players go on to play in the KHL, I don't follow them at all.

But I am a hockey fan (Stars fan). While any event such as this is tragic, this one hit a little closer to home for me. On that flight were a few players that had just played the previous season in the NHL. Among them was Kārlis Skrastiņš, and a favorite player of mine, who played with the Stars the last two seasons. Had the Stars tendered him an offer he might still be here...only someone else would have taken his place on the plane. His wife was pregnant at the time, and among the many photos posted on hockey forums it was seeing this one of his daughter that hammered home who was affected.

Not only were lives lost, players, staff, flight crew, but families and friends were lost. So many people affected.. and it was incredibly touching and amazing to see people come together with wonderful tributes and vigils.

My avatar is of remembrance.

WOW, that's the best one yet, thanks for sharing. I remember hearing about that, tragic, all those people lost and many NHL stars as well. Again thanks for sharing, now I know what that emblem means. Awsome avatar!

Yeah, that was tragic. I can't remember who it was but there was a Canadian who went to play in the KHL but he quit because he said the planes were a disgrace. He said something was going to happen and a few months later this tragedy occurred. I believe that the Russians have been upgrading their planes since this happened.
