All these pieces have been sold. I will try to find more in the near future. Thanks everybody.

This is my favorite piece of wood that I have cut in a long time. I have kept this piece hidden for about 3 years. It was cut out of a 6000+ pound burl and was probably the very best piece.

Further down in this thread I have added a few more pieces cut from this same burl that do not cost as much.

This is a very expensive piece that should be used for only the best of the best knives you make. If it was up to me, I would keep it in my office so I could take it out and look at it once in a while.

But.......my boss said we are wood sellers, not wood collectors.
So my thinking was that if I have to sell it, I can still make sure that it will only go to someone who will appreciate what they are getting and treat it like the treasure it is.

This wood is underground redwood burl. As good as it gets. You would be justified to call it; Exhibition Grade, Presentation Grade or Museum Grade. It is unlikely either you or I will see a better piece of redwood burl.

These are new photos because the first ones I took didn't do a good job showing what this burl is like.

First one to post; "I'll Take #......" gets it. Paypal is preferred.

#1065 SOLD- Selling price is $400. to include US shipping.
Dimensions are 24&1/4" long x 10&5/8" wide x 2&1/2" thick. Weighs about 8 pounds. Photos are taken of the wood misted lightly with water. It will look much better when finished and buffed.

WOW! Very Nice. I'll have to stick to the smaller stuff for now. I hope you'll have more special pieces to come in the future.

do you have a lay away policy--only kidding-marekz

Here are some more pieces cut from the same burl that are a lot more affordable, but still amazing pieces of burl. If you calculate your cost per handle when you cut these up, the prices are pretty reasonable.

Ohhh man... That 1069 looks PERFECT. Perfect price, perfect size, perfect burl.

Too bad I don't have perfect funds... If for some crazy reason this is still here in a few weeks, I'll be all up on it. But, I doubt it will last until the weekend.

Mark can you please tell me if I'm figuring approximate handle block yields right?

  • 10" x 10" x 2" slab = 10 blocks @ 5" x 2" x 2"
Thus at $85 for the slab the 10 cut blocks would average $8.50 each? I'm guessing I must be way off here. Is there lots of loss due to selective cutting?

Thanks, Phil

Hey Phil,
The industry average size block is 5" long x 1&1/2 wide x 1" thick but I like to cut them bigger.
If I was cutting one of the 10x10s into blocks I would cut them into 4 - 2&1/2 inch wide strips. Each of these strips I would cut in half to 5" long making 8 pieces 2&1/2 x 2&1/4 x 5 inches. Next I would look at each block to see which side had the best face. Then I would split the thickness. This way I could adjust each block for the best looking faces and still get 16 blocks that were 5" long x 2"+ wide and 1&1/8" thick. Big enough for most knives.

As you can see, this works out as a sweetheart deal for whoever gets this stuff.
My boss told me I should sell some as bigger pieces at discounted prices like this. Didn't have to tell me twice. I posted them here before he changed his mind.

These blocks will be listed here for just a few days. After that I will be cutting up any remaining pieces to be sold as individual blocks in our webstore. Individually the blocks cut from this have been selling for $15 and up for the natural and $30 and up for the stabilized.

Man, wish I had the extra dough right now! Although great for knife handles with the great figure and size of that burl I would probably slice it up and make a fancy table top with it!

When the time comes, get in touch. We have a lot of big furniture wood here.
I still have some 4 ft x 5 ft pieces from this burl.
