Extremely dissapointed with the Black Friday sales this year

Is anyone else really disappointed with this year's black friday sales on knives? I figured atleast a few of the big online retailers would have really good sales but (and I won't name names but I'm talking abot a couple different site vendors) make a huge deal leading up to today, they make whole sections of their web sites "black Friday" this and "cyber Monday" that but when it actually gets here its free shipping on orders over $100 or 5% off, I mean really?!

I planned on gettin knives for a few of my family/friends and one for me from my kids but the total from the one site is under $100 and 5% off the other total is aboit just a couple bucks. The only knives on sale are the ones already on clearance and arnt marked down any extra!

I will not be doing any business with either of the 2 places I'm specifically talking about again, this is 2013, consumers set the market and us consumers demand a Black Friday sale that's something better than the same sale you have for every other holiday!

For comparison I just got home from my local knife store (which is actually a gun store but they have a really great selection of knives) where I picked up (again this is a walk-in retail, non-chain store) an Esee 3 for the price of an ontario rat-3. Now I don't expect 50% off expensive stuff, or even anything near that, but what they did offer was a freaking joke...
 
Agreed. I voted with my money. Nothing to the big internet storefront. Had a health budget too. Over $500.

This sort of mentality is far worse then not finding a few deals on a day made up to get people's $$$, imo of course. The popular production market is already flooded with awesome deals & if you could see the vendors books/how little online vendors make you would probably agree.

The instant gratification handed to us on a regular basis is quite sickening when you really stop and think about it. If you look around you will find that there really are some great existing deals out there. So many online sellers that in order for them to make ANY $ they all undercut one another like crazy. Hardly any popular knives out on the market that cant be found for 15% over half of msrp. I find it hard to believe that esse you bought at the B&m cost less then 9 out of 10 places offerings them online, then again I could be wrong. No problem accepting that one : )
 
too much hype....I was black "black Fridayed" out weeks ago....


wont go near a shopping center/internet dealer for a while
 
I think some people don't realize that most on-line vendors already are selling not to far above dealer cost. Alot of times there is not a huge margin of profits, basically quantity is how they make a living. The only exception is like my local brick and mortar kitchen cutlery, culinary supplies carries a small selection of benchmade and spyderco at msrp and then would beable to offer a big discount for a black Friday deal and still turn a profit.
 
Just to add a piece of info .At one point in time I had insider info from a friend on dealer pricing. As an example years ago a spyderco Chinook might have been $97.00-$103.00 at dealer cost not including shipping. It wasn't unsual to see them sell from $113.00 to $125.00 on-line dealers and sellers on ebay. Now that's not a whole lot of money especially when the manufacturers msrp might be double dealer cost. Pricing is set up for a reason and on-line dealers are already cutting themselves down to minimal profits. So 5% or 10% or free shipping is a big deal.
 
In spydercos case, atleast in a situation where I saw directly what the dealer paid from a distributor, He paid half of msrp. If msrp was $100, he paid $50 plus fees associated with the distributor. Not always the case with all but I think its for the most part the gold standard. Myself when purchasing, I always try to get as close to half off msrp if not less. Atleast thats what helps me justify buying a knife everyday of the week : P

I'm seeing some decent deals on the lower priced stuff like the Zancudo and Thermite. My budget is low to nothing this year so that's where I'm looking. Really you can only expect so much of a discount on a knife that retails for $35.

I was also disappointed. Knifeworks has every day prices that beat Knife Center's 20% Black Friday deals (on all the stuff I didn't want.)
 
I've had wholesale accounts for close to 30 years with distributors who supply just about any brand of knife, scope, or other accessory that you can think of. I have stopped stocking and selling knives & accessories entirely because I cannot process an order at a profit when I'm only making $5-$10 on an item....

Back in the day before the Internet, a small Mom & Pop sporting goods store made about 10-20% on guns and ammo, and had a mark-up of close to 100% on knives, optics, etc. This enabled them to make something called a living.

Today, those margins are so slim that in many cases they won't even support the website and credit card processing costs, muck less provide a profit. The result is that a dealer has to either go mega big so that they can buy factory direct at jobber cost (usually about 15% -20% below dealer), or they need to fold their tent. There's really no room for a small scale dealer anymore.

In other words, quit your bitchin' - other folks need to make a living too.

Yeah, its a bunch of hype, and I wish they wouldn't even bother sending all of the Black Friday emails.
I should've just deleted them all before I opened them.

Like others have said, many are already selling at a very low profit margin, so I don't expect them to offer deals much better than they already do.
 
You want to talk about hype , blade hq hyped it up do freaking much yet there "deals" suck as always and it was just crap they have trouble geting rid of in the first place

Ahh yes, this is what we can the dreaded "First World" problem. The original purpose of Black Friday was for in store shopping only, not necessarily the online stores. If you want a deal, find something you would like to buy in the Exchange or contact a custom maker and negotiate away.
 
The only black friday item that I bought was dog food. Huge savings and I have 2 big, hungry dogs. Enough dog food to last a year. Cool. But nothing else.

Seriously, it doesn't bother me if I don't see anything that is needed on sale. Back home in S. La. we have a term called "lagniappe", that means something a little extra. Buy a sandwich, get a free bag of chips. Sales are like that. Lagniappe. Something extra. Not something we're entitled to. Shoot, I look all year long for the best price anyway. I don't expect vendors to owe me anything come black friday or cyber monday or whatever.

Ya, I used to have an FFL many moons ago. A "friend" of mine was interested in a pistol I gave him a price 20.00 above dealer cost due to our friendship. He said well the gunshop is selling the same pistol for only $30.00 more than you want to charge me. I said well my profit is very low and I still have to do the paperwork for the transfer. This guy thought having an FFL friend was going to save him 100.00 or 150.00 like the mark-ups were enormous or something. I don't know what the hell he thought but he paid 30.00 more to the gunshop and didn't order it from me like an idiot. Needless to say we weren't friends after that nonsense.
