FAA Bans ALL Knives ...

Here's one for the would-be Air Marshalls (and that's probably every one of us, me included) - Go to a MA school, and tell the sensei that you want to try coming at him, or a senior student, with a dummy knife, down a narrow aisle like in a plane. Sign the waiver and go for it. Find out what you're really talking about.

I've got $10 (Canadian, sorry) that says you get him.

Thing is unarmed fighting arts are no match against weapons. There is a reason that so much of (Japanese anyhow) unarmed martial arts is about tying up your armed opponent until you can get your own weapon out.

No steak knives to cut airplane food. No plastic knives, no tiny SAKs, or even knives checked into luggage. I understand the need for greater security, but at what point is it just plain ridiculous?!

So I suppose there will be no food served on planes, because forks, steel or plastic, can also be improvised weapons. What about the good things knives can accomplish in emergencies??? What if a knife of some sort is needed to cut someone free of whatever? How many lives may be jeopardized or lost as a result of not having an efficient blade available when one is needed??!

If they are indeed banning even knives in checked-in luggage, I fear this is only the beginning of a general banning or extreme restriction of knives not only on airlines, but in all areas of everyday life. Unfortunately, I feel the anti-knife contingent is riding this heinous tragedy for all it's worth and will not stop at airline restrictions.

I expected this. Anyone who didn't was fooling themselves. Doesn't matter now, anyway. If I can't get somewhere by bus, train, or ship, I just plain don't need to go there. Riding a bus, I may get there later, but at least I will arrive.

Everything that I have heard is that knives will be allowed in checked baggage because no one has access to it during flight.

You can even have knives in Checked Baggage on International Flights.

Not lethal, just a better weapon to counter a knife, and there at our disposal. My point was that, as you said, with training, you won't need a knife, and it won't seem so all fired important to carry one on a plane.

Did anyone who fired off an angry letter to their government representatives sign up for a MA class? Or even check out a school?

You got it right Brian. In reference to going at a trained MA person with a dummy weapon, been there and done that!!!! Not again!!!

Ahhhhhh yes, remember the good old days?

It's not surprising the FAA overreacts to what happened. The simple fact is the FAA does nothing until something does happen, and then they usually overreact.

Don't be so surprised that the General Public looks at knives (or even box cutters) as dangerous weapons, just look at all the members here that only see them as weapons. I heard Spyderco ran some commercials on TV showing knives being used in a positive light, I never saw one. Until WE start showing and thinking of knives being used as practical and handy tools, with them no more dangerous than a fork or a pen don't expect anyone elses attitude to change about them. You want to carry weapons, you can count on someone else wanting to take them out of your hands.

I just read the Benchmade website and a fellow there whose wife is a travel agent said that the FAA will still allow knives and cutting tools in checked baggage. The local travel agent I talked to said no knives at all. I guess the best thing to do is to call one's airline if you are going to travel.

I checked the FAA website and it says that knives and other cutting tools must be stored in checked baggage. That makes much more sense than a total ban because a knife or scissors in the luggage bin can't do anything to anyone.

It's time to give Newt Livesay a call :D

I just saw a story on NBC by Bob Arnot who recently traveled out of Phoenix. Of course he traveled first class. He showed that they still hand out steel forks and spoons, but with a plastic picnic knife. So I guess plastic knives are still allowed.

FAA allows knives of any size as long as it will be checked in baggage.

The FAA may still allow knives, but they have traditionally left it up to each airline as to what is and is not allowed. From what I can glean, the airlines themselves are the ones forbidding ALL knives. Some are even prohibiting carry-ons.

#*@%ing sheeple make me sick! Nevermind the fact that you can kill with bare hands. A combat arts student is completely capable of this after a couple years of training. What happens to them? Handcuffs? Sometimes the mentallity of the society I live in embarrasses the hell out of me. Sheeple...GET A CLUE!:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:
