FaceBook !

I'm on there; I'll join the group. I got on facebook a while back, and got some really creepy stuff (contacts) from somebody who thought they knew me from college. (Not me. I ain't never been to their planet. Ain't been to college neither.) They (facebook) have cleaned up things quite a bit, so I hang around occasionally.

This will drive my wife over the edge. TWO places to hang out with knifefolk? :D

thx - cpr

All I know is, my boss is on Facebook and entered me as a friend last week.

Now, in the past week, I have deleted 30 naughty invitation spammer/phishing emails FROM 'Facebook'. Coincidence? I think NOT.

Once your name's in there it's another disease. Pass.

Coop

I agree with Coop as Facebook being another disease. One of our daughters joined up w/ Facebook a while back and sent me an invitation. Since it was one of our daughters I didn't check Facebook out, just signed up.:o :grumpy:
Then shortly after there was a big flap about Facebook changing their TOS and people getting up in arms over it ("We Can Do Anything We Want With Your Content. Forever.")... so much so that Facebook recanted and changed the TOS back to the way it was.
Along with all that and other things that's happened to folks on Facebook I deleted my account probably never to return...
I do miss not having the sort of contact that I had with my kids and grandkids on Facebook though, it was fun and we, my dear bride and me learned things we never suspected about any of them. ;) :)

.

Sorry to rain in on the parade, but be careful with facebook. employers these days like to check out employee pages.
Or a fellow co-worker that you may have invited may take a look as well, though I've heard no stories about co-workers ratting out another co-worker based on a facebook page.
Either way, one has to be careful how one portrays themselves in the workplace.

p.s if anyone from work is reading my msgs, I would like to re-iterate my pacifist liberal, beliefs.

I'm from the wrong generation. I have no interest whatsoever in crappy social networking sites. If that's your thing, fine, but you won't see me there.

(Yes, I'm sure you're all very glad you won't see me there).

I joined just to play Bejeweled Blitz and outscore the members of my forums. I'm self employed (my boss is an asshole!), so no worries about employers finding me on there for now. Plus, I'm on there as my business name, not my real name. :D

I joined. In case anyone else here got sucked into Mafia Wars, can you please add me? I've reached the point where a mafia of only 10 is getting their butts kicked.

Didn't even know there was a group on Facebook from here. I'll join.

I'm not big on social sites like Myspace and such, but I've got some friends who moved to Hawaii, and this is a nice way to keep in touch with them, so I started a profile. I have kept it private however, so only my friends can see anything I write. I agree that all need to be cautious about what they put in the public spotlight, it can come back to to bite you later......

I will pass on those public sites. I am from a generation that generally prefered some privacy in their lives.

In addition to the problems people already listed, I wonder who owns Facebook and these other social networking sites? They have piles of personal information on file.

The question comes to mind is; What could they do with this information? I am sure that the governments and marketers are drooling over the prospects of mining this data, to further their own interests at the expence of others.

BIG BROTHER!!! to be sure.

Evidently there is no safe haven on the net.

Am I missing something here? Is Facebook somehow able to magically suck out private information against people's will? People make it sound like they implant a GPS in your skull and mount hidden cameras all over your house.

That's what I was thinking. I know this is going against the tide, but Facebook seems to me to be as risky as you make it. The ultimate responsibility falls on the individual user: if you don't want something out there, don't put it out there. Self-censorship.

And as for creepies contacting you, I know it's a royal PITA, but you can make yourself invisible (for the most part, if not completely) to anyone but your friends.

I also believe they have their own satellites that can track individuals and read their thoughts.

Everyone knows that Facebook doesn't "magically suck out private information". The problem is that people become too comfortable with the site and start to post personal information. Example - I have a friend that posts pictures of her children and posts how they are doing in school. She doesn't understand how dangerous that could be.

I don't really care one way or the other, but if idiots choose to disclose private information to a public arena that is hardly the fault of Facebook or anyone else. Let me give you an analogy. If I build a really high tower and tell you that you can, if you want, climb up there and jump off and probably kill yourself, and you do so, who's fault is it? Mine? The towers? Or the idiot who climbs up and jumps off?

It's all part of the modern decline that dictates that, no matter how stupid people are, somebody else must always be at fault.

BTW notrevo, I'm not having a go at you personally, I just get a little annoyed at people's refusal to accept any personal responsibility.

The message is pretty simple. Don't want people doing stuff with your personal information? Don't join things like Facebook.

If you're happy to have you're stuff out there, don't blame somebody else if it's misused.

Umm...I am on facebook. About the only personal info they even ask for is a name, phone, e-mail, and addy. All but the e-mail is totally optional. Hell, I could put false info up there if I cared. Not much people can do with my cell number, PO Box and name.
