FaceBook !

Am I missing something here? Is Facebook somehow able to magically suck out private information against people's will? People make it sound like they implant a GPS in your skull and mount hidden cameras all over your house.

The big privacy issue that people were complaining about a while back was when Facebook started a new "feature" that posted what you bought online to your account, using cookies or tracking software, I assume. It's still there and is still turned on by default when you create an account. I recommend going in and turning EVERYTHING off in the privacy settings if you do create an account. You don't have to use real information. With 150 million or however many accounts they have, it's not like they check to see if you are using factual information.

As far as what they do with the data mined from personal information, they make pathetic attempts at targeted marketing using the data. I'm sure they could use it for much more nefarious means, but no one has really figured out a good way to do so yet, or at least they haven't told anyone about it. I'm sure the whole world will be told as soon as Facebook et al figure out how to use the data to make more money. Until then, we only have to deal with crappy sidebar ads with hot chicks telling us we can make $1000 a day from home.

As for who owns what, Facebook owns Facebook and Rupert Murdoch's empire owns MySpace (Fox, etc.).

Nothing I've bought so far has shown up anywhere on my facebook page, I don't know if it's really still turned on. Also, I use Firefox with Adaware so I've never seen any of these ads you're talking about. So far, so good, but the account will be scuttled the minute I see any shenanigans go on.
