Factory Edge Idea

No one complains about getting axes/hatchets that require work on the edge. They all do. Knifes should be the same. I don't remember getting ANY production or custom that had an edge that pleased me. I had to work on ALL the knives I got. I find it a pleasant task to sharpen them to a polished consistent edge.

I would sure complain if it wasn't usable right after purchase.
You should be able to buy an axe on the way to the woods and use it that day, the way it is when bought.

Now sure, if you want an edge that pleases the Norse gods so that they'll hail your name in the Halls of Valhalla, you're gonna have to spend some time fixing it up, but that's a different matter. ;)

Every chisel, every handplane comes with an edge that needs to be sharpened. None of them will work correctly right out of the box. Everyone in the trades that work with wood knows that.

Hard to see why knives should be different.

Disagree there. Just got a new chisel here and it's perfect out of the box. Can post pictures later if anyone wants to see it.

Everytime I read a thread and/or post by this guy, I feel like a bunch of my brain cells jumped off a skyscraper. If this continues I'll be Homer Simpson in no time. Maybe I should just stick a crayon up my nose and get it over with.
I'm guessing his next thread will be if he can buy a brand new car with only the engine block.

Best to just use the IGNORE button and move along if you feel that way. Personal insults should not really be used here, keep it in W/C instead.

I'm not sure if you've seen my thread about factory edges and how much I hate them, but sadly I have to say this is a long shot lol.

Yes it would be nice to not have to fix someone else's mistakes which takes me about 90-120mins since I'm so anal
Con
I would spend soooo much more time created my OWN secondary bevel lol.

Kudos for speaking your mind though brother !

So, everyone is unhappy with factory edges.

Has any manufacturer offered a knife with no edge? Just the knife, thinned, maybe ground down to shape, maybe the grinding done, but no edge?

The the customer could put whatever edge he or she wanted on it, right out of the box.
I am pretty sure that most people are quite happy with factory edges. It is only those people whose sharpening skills allow them to put a better edge on a knife than the factory who might be considered "unhappy."

I can put a better edge on a knife than any factory edge I have seen so far, though I am rarely unhappy about the prospect. And because my tolerances for what is acceptable in a pocket knife is rather broad, I find many factory edges to be adequate for use without me doing anything to them at all. I can fix them up on the first sharpening if I really feel like it. Some, I just need to strop off the burr the factory leaves. Some need genuine sharpening.

Some people love to sharpen. I learned it specifically so I can have sharp knives, but unless I am really in the mood for it and have plenty of uninterrupted time, I view sharpening as a necessary chore. Therefore, if I don't have to, I won't do it.

Turns out that a lot of people, including some knife aficionados, are not good at sharpening. It took me several years of slow improvement to get to where I am comfortable free-handing, coming from not being able to do so at all, so I certainly understand. Those people want a sharp and useful knife out of the box.

As to your question about "has any manufacturer offered a knife with no edge?" Sure - Queen and GEC (a while back, they are much better now) were infamous for having the primary bevel go almost all the way to the edge, with the actual edge resembling a rather obtuse microbevel. Some fans of the brands touted it as a feature, allowing you to put your own first edge on them. Most viewed it as a defect.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the only kind of knife you should have !

Benchmade is the only company I've had an issue with the factory edge, every thing else has been usable. Granted, I rarely spend less than $100 on a modern folder, so I expect a decent edge.

I don't particularly enjoy sharpening, in fact I suck at it.

One company does. It's called Opinel.

I figured there had to be at least one. If the idea occurs to me, it had to have occurred to someone else.

Well, you know, someone beyond the brilliant minds in this thread, anyway.

Sure, but only if it's not pakistani :poop:....
