Factory knife sharpness?

Here's what I have discovered, Spyderco, never got one that wasn't shaving sharp, Bark River, hit or miss, two were amazing, two were shockingly dull. Benchmade, same as Bark River, hit or miss. Frost and Ericksson Mora, hit or miss, didn't seem to matter if they were carbon or stainless. I take blade to stone shortly after taking possession of a new knife, so it matters not to me.

Consistently, probably Spyderco has the best record with me.
But the sharpest blade I ever got out of the box was a KaBar Large Dozier.

I actually don't put a high regard on out-of-the-box sharpness. I can fix it with a few strokes on the Sharpmaker. Big Woop.

I've gotten the odd spyderco that wasn't up to par but even at they all put to shame the benchmades, kershaws and sogs I own.

Most Kershaws are sharper than I ever expect out of the box...most are literally scary sharp. Only an occasional one is duller than that norm, but I've never seen one that couldn't cut cardboard or anything else expected of it.

My Bark River fixed-blades are amazingly sharp...

Basically, though, my answer here is the same as it always is...I don't expect a knife, folding or fixed-blade, to be as sharp as a razor or shave my arms or butt or anything else...If I did, I'd carry a straight razor instead...

Ray :)

I've been lucky with: Spyderco, Emerson and Boker. All, have been shaving sharp. They must have been sharpened Tues. thru Thurs.!!

Sharpness out of the box:
Bark River 98.0000313%, Benchmade 85.0132%, modern Moras (Frosts or Erikksons) 97.00266%, Made in China 12.095601%

These are based on my extensive testing and studies and calculated to be accurate to within 2.005 degrees (inclusive).

Stretch - - you don't happen to be an engineer down in Alamagordo, are you ? :) Regards, - -

In my experience:

Bark River, 100 percent. They don't leave the shop otherwise. :)

Bob Dozier 110 percent! :D You learn what "scary sharp" really means.

Spyderco 100 percent

Benchmade 100 percent

Kershaw 90 percent (But my S30V Blur is a magnificent knife after proper sharpening.)

All others that I have experience with: :thumbdn:

OTOH, I've never owned a Chris Reeve, Strider, Randall or many others, so take that into consideration.

falkniven is , from my observation has the best factory, edge,

, oddly, some models of knife from buck, seem to be very well sharpened,, .. others not :S...

Every Bark River and Spyderco I've ordered has arrived hair popping sharp...

In my experience the dullest factory edge known to man comes from Case knives - In the last 40 years I don't recall seeing even one that came from the factory reasonably sharp.

Sharpest out of the box for me was a Spyderco Versuvious. It was scary sharp. It didn't shave hair, it shaved skin. Really sharp. All my Spyderco's have been really sharp out of the box. My Benchmades are about 98%.

Spyderco and Kershaw have been great. My CRKT First Strike was PATHETIC.

Interesting...my Tanto-bladed CRKT Stealth First Strike, model 2705KOD, is quite sharp right out of the box, somewhat surprising considering its blade profile. (I got it because it was inexpensive for an acceptably done handle wrap.)

Of course, it doesn't compare to my Bark River Bravo 1...:D

Yeah mine is the OD as well... Hmm welp it was 25 bucks new at Big 5 so I cant complain. ;)

Sharpest out of the box: Sebenza

close second: Spyderco--I don't even check the sharpness anymore on a new Spyderco; they all are consistently sharp beyond expectations.

surprise to me: Buck knives, fixed or folder, have all had a pleasant knife-knut sharpness straight out of box.

CRKTs and Benchmades come SUPER polished. Hairs pop right off, can't slice paper worth a dang. Kershaw came with a weak edge, dulled pretty quickly (Okay, I cut through some fiber glass tape)
