Factory knife sharpness?

CRKTs and Benchmades come SUPER polished. Hairs pop right off, can't slice paper worth a dang. Kershaw came with a weak edge, dulled pretty quickly (Okay, I cut through some fiber glass tape)

that'll do it lol ;)

Kershaw for me. Lahar especially (only knife i own that scares me when playing with it). of course when it gets back from Mr. Krien, i will prolly have a dif opinion from then on. not that that is a bad thing :D

In my experience, no company has been 100% ready to go with every knife I've bought from them, but Spyderco comes the closest. Out of 30 or more purchases, ONLY my two ZDP189 D4s were below par (wouldn't shave or push cut newsprint).

I have limited experience with Al Mar, but the two knives I've gotten from them have been the equal of Spyderco's top O-O-B sharpness.

Nobody else that I have any experience with comes close to these two.

Most of the time, the edge is what determines if I keep or sell/trade/return a knife, I hate thick grinds and I am tired of spending hours on the stone with a new knife to get a decent edge. Queen has been one of the worst for me. They have excellant fit/finish and good prices, but their edges are horrible.

I have had good luck with spydercos, benchmades, Kershaws, Fallkniven, Buck and Victorinox SAK. Some of the Kershaws edged were too thick although they were sharp. A thick edge is not the most efficent at cutting. I have a few Doziers which are excellent. I have two older Sebenzas with BG42 steel that are excellent. I had a new Small classic Sebenza reground By Tom Krein that is the best sharp knife I own. I have ordered two small fixed blades from Tom and can't wait to have them. Queen knives come with the worst edge I have seen. BTW, I have had some Custom/handmade knives that had bad edges on them.

Having spent the last two days handling literally hundreds of NIB Spyderco knives (CKG show :) ), my answer would be - Spyderco. Prior to that, my answer would have been - Spyderco.

Spyderco and Kershaw are about the same in my book, nine times out of ten they come hair popping sharp.
The sharpest knife I've ever handled was a Spyderco.

Benchmade does ok most of the time.
It's surprising they don't pay more attention to sharpness, seeing as they do such a good job with everything else.

Spyderco, for me...real nice factory edges.

Sharpest factory edge out of the box of any knife I ever bought was on a Spyderco D'Allara Drop Point.

Spyderco has been consistently hair popping or tree topping from the factory, with only a couple ones that merely shaved for me. For customs Tom Krein sent my Ultimate Caper free hanging hair cutting sharp (better than tree topping), with a 120 grit finished that sliced like crazy.

I've never owned a Spyderco, but I am starting to lean to 'a tip of the hat' to Kershaw. I will give them that all 4 of the Kershaws I have owned were arm shaving sharp out of the box. As alluded to earlier the big boys (Case, Ontario, etc.) have been really disappointing to me on numerous occasions (often on several fronts, tool marks, handle gaps, economizing on materials, etc).

What, no mention of Al-Mar? when I got my SERE 2000, it came hair-whittling sharp RIGHT out of the box!

really!

benchmade and Mcusta had the sharpest new in box knives i have bought with spydeco and kershaw about equal in second granted i only have 1 spydie and 1 NIB kershaw.

every cold steel i have ever seen has been amazingly sharp. close second to spyderco/current benchmades. benchmade has come a long way as their NIB sharpeness was once a joke. newer models have been every bit the equal of spyderco. kershaw impressed me once with a blackout and since then i have been dissappointed in their sharpness. this includes a speed/spec bump, zdp cyclone and a zt0200 as well.

Most of the Kershaw's, Spyderco's, Benchmade's, Emerson's came very sharp. I had to send back a Case knife with a BG42 blade but it came back very sharp.

However, the Mcusta VG10 knife that I got was about the sharpest of all.
(I do have a Tom Krein ZDP189 regrind on the way back that should be sweet.)
