Factory Seconds?

I heard that Spyderco sometimes sells factory seconds, i.e. knives with manufacturing blemishes that are otherwise in new condition.

That sounds like a great way to get a good price on a working knife (where looks aren't critical).

So, my question: how does one buy these factory seconds? Any chance they can be made available on bladeforums?

I apologize if this has been discussed before. I tried searching the archives, but the search function appears to be broken - I get a "server misconfigured" error whenever I try.

Sal,
Would you please elaborate on that? Do you mean they're sold from your factory only in the state or are they in some type of store in CO or do you call and buy directly?

Thanks,

Greg - In the past we would once or twice a year place some small ads in the local papers and run a 2 day second & used knife sale. Usually in the parking lot. We are currently deciding whether of not to do it this way in the future. Not likely to try to do this outside of Golden. Margins and prices are very low. Too low to promote them. Mostly we're trying to recoup the investment in the piece. These are blemished items rather than faulty. (No bad locks, etc.)

Now if I could just find a good job in Golden! Hard to catch those sales from the East Coast.

I love Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Hope to move back to that area some day. Maybe then I can stock up on seconds!

Don't be afraid to advertise them here, Sal, I'm sure they'd be snapped up. Take less time and money than selling them in the parking lot too.

Sounds like Spark has a plan! I'd be all over some seconds. Wouldn't feel so bad about using them hard and mean.

Sal, I think it would also be SAFER to sell them here through BF. I mean, via the Web there is no chance of customers getting all agressive and physical about reserving the pieces on offer (as I suppose may happen in the "parking lot scenario"!

I get a mental image of Spyderco employees in the parking lot, trying to explain in a calm voice that they just sold the last factory second on the web. Pitchforks and torches materialize out of nowhere and it just gets ugly from there. And people thought the Y2K "bug" was going to be the end of civilization!

Hey, if you sell all the factory second knives to us DISCERNING forumites via the web, there is NO NEED to face all the RUFFIANS in the parking lot! Some thought to ponder...

Almost picked up a factory second military at the Denver gun show today, prive was $80.00/ Only thing that kept me from getting one was the BF fire sale, hopefully I'll get a Benchmade 710.

Only thing I really really wanted this trip was the video on sharping, but they did not have any, next gun show mabey?????

Sal, I'll take a few of those seconds, you can mark mine as seconds by punching a hole in the blade!

Hey, I'm sure we'd be enthusiastic enough to help out with a certain portion of seconds. Maybe it would cut down on the volume of parking lot inventory (and hours of that sale, as well).
I bet we can help by "thinning out" the herd somewhat.

Ewok - If a blade fails heat treat, it's not a 2nd, it's scrap.

The Militarys at the gun show were not really 2nds. One of the guys collected a few of them that were laying around in finishing. We couldn't tell whether they were 440V 0r ATS-34 without messing them up. So he cleaned them up and took them to the gun show.

We normally don't get a great deal of 2nds. When we do get some, we just run a 2nd sale at the outlet store. Usually only once, sometimes twice a year.
