I just moved to Fairbanks from Troy Montana about a month ago. Lots of you know me, many didnt like me because of one of the companies that I supported (and still do) But I am a member of this forum. I am looking to see if any of the Forum Members are located out here as well. Thanks for your time and consideration.

We have been here 29 years. You got here just in time for break up. Things will be a mess for a few weeks but it will not be long until our glorious Summer starts. All the trash and litter that blows out of trucks is stuck in the snow banks starts to show up. Almost every year there is a letter to the editor written by a visitor or newcomer talking about what a messy town we have. The first of May we have a big cleanup.
What brings you here? Fortunately living here is not for everyone but I cant see ever leaving myself.
I can introduce you to the local knfemakers I know if you are interested.
If you plan on staying there a lot of toys you will need.
Give me a call there is any thing I can do for you. 388- 0927

Haven't lived there since the mid-70's, but it was a great place to spend a couple years. So many outdoor activities during the the entire year. Fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, etc. You just need to get used to the sun coming up verry early during the spring and summer. Got there in April and couldn't get used to the sun beaming into my bedroom window at 3 and 4 AM. And the short days during the winter and ice fog. And the snow snakes. :D

And if you're a betting man, check out the Nenana Ice Classic.

Aaawwwwww man! I didn't get up to the Yaak/Troy area in time to meet you, I guess. Enjoy the north! The winters there will be a little different than what you see in the lower 48, I think.

Look forward to hearing about your experiences up there.

thx - cpr

Come visit out here man, its beautiful!!!

We plan to eventually; we love the snow, and I missed the Alaska part of our last at-sea time when I got out of the navy.

On a side note: what are your knife needs going to look like now? Any major differences than when you were "down below"? I know for me, here in Concord, I don't need the gear I needed in MT. Lighter & smaller fits the bill.

thx - cpr

My knife needs are something I have been thinking about since getting here. I have been thinking about more fixed blades as EDCs. probably without bolsters, as any metal to skin in freezing weather could prove uncomfortable. I am really thinking about traditional Puukos and maybe some modified Bushcrafts (I love Scandi grinds) I dont think I will give up my folders though. I love my ZT 300, and all my spydies, and my one Emerson, and lots of others including some Mantis knives and a custom folder from Coogler. I am still waiting for the right tim eto get another Strider too.

Did you get sent to da 'Banks, or did you do it to yourself?

Puukos are great for up here, particularly in the interior, as they come from an identical climate. Helle is a decent brand if you don't want to shell out for a custom piece. There's a decent shop up there, but I can't remember what it's called. If you head down here, Northern Knives is the place to go. Great selection and good people there (except for that surly KnifeAddictAK fella :p).

RW66: Like you I'm a newbe-here on this forum but I've lived in North Pole for almost 20 years---hard to believe, how time flies. There's a gun show at the Patty Center on the UAF campus next weekend. I usually have a table along the back wall right next to the local CAS club, stop by for a meet and great.

Welcome to the land of the frozen chosen. If you make it down to Anchor Town before the end of June give me a yell, I'd be glad to have you over for a coffee. I am packing up my shop now and headed south, wife can't shovel snow any more so it is time to head out. Leaving in June, still have some equipment that I am getting rid of along with some other things I don't want to ship. Give me a call (907) 272-2253. Again, welcome to Alaska.

I am headed to the Show at the Patty center today. Look for the 6'7" giant with the shaved head. I will probably be wearing a Strider T shirt!!!

We came up here because my wife took a Job at the University!!! Its a great place!!!

Im in Wyoming now, but my next move which will be soon will either be to Montana or Alaska. You are a lucky man my friend, you live or lived in my two dream states.

Out of curiousity, what knife company do you like that you are hated for?

Thanks man, I loved Montana, but Alaska is even better. My wife and I are both from the east coast, and met in Washington State. Moved to a very small town in Montana a couple years after I retired from the Navy, and when the economy got worse we moved out here. I am applying for a couple of positions, and my wife has a decent Job at the University.
As far as knife company, I wasnt actually hated. I have been a fan of a certain knife company for a couple of years. Unfortunately ther was a spamming incident several months ago involving that company. I dont want to bring it to light again, If you want to know more we can bring it to PMs.

I am curious, shoot me an e mail. Also, my soon to be wife that will be moving with me to Alaska is a teacher. You should ask your wife for me how the teaching jobs are out there. Are there a ton of teaching positions, or are they pretty booked. She has her masters degree and loves to teach. I am a LEO and I hear getting a LEo job in Alaska isnt that hard with plenty of openings.

Stay safe brother, and enjoy it out there. If we end up moving to Montana we were looking at the Ceily lake area, and i am sure I spelled that wrong.
