Morning guys. Headed out of town today to go visit a friend in rehab. I have eliminated all contact with her for the last 6 months so she can focus on getting all cleaned up and she is doing fantastic. I am so happy for her that she is finally getting clean, I'm just glad that this was her own choice and not court ordered or anything.

The funny thing is I'll be driving right past Serge Panchenko's shop and maybe an hour from Mike Quesenberry's, but no time to visit.

Nice! Cool you get to make a range! Back in the day I used to put paper targets on hay bales and shoot them with my longbow. As a Boy Scout I spent lots of time on the range, lol even got down the double target shoot with 2 arrows like in Robin Hood! :D
 
I wanted to have a range like my buddy's. He has an archery range set up that we can shoot our bows out to 75 yards.The more we practiced at the longer ranges when you have a deer at 20 yards it is like I pick the hair I want to shoot at.I strive for the fastest possible death for animals I kill.It is awesome when you see them drop within 40 yards. I have had deer shot with my bow take 2 jumps and stand there looking for what caused the noise then take off on the death run.
 
Just found out (yesterday) what I'll be doing this summer. I can't wait!

I'll be doing my Naval Boarding Party course (six weeks) and two weeks sailing on an MCDV as a ships hand (Wikipedia site)

Morning men. Daniel I am super pumped to have my second giant .36 thick chopper made by you!! My daughters boyfriend asked me for permission to propose to her this summer and I gave him my blessing! His family has 18 acres close to me that has lots of woods for me to test my knives! He is a great kid and the main thing is he treats my daughter like she is on a pedestal.I told his parents about it yesterday after they left for school. His parents are also super excited about the two of them getting married.

Morning y'all. Yep, same girl. Had a great trip and she is doing fantastic! We spent the day cruising downtown, walking through antique shops, toy stores for the kids, art galleries, cafe's, and stuff like that. Even ate lunch in an old gold mine! I grew up spending my summers near this town, but its been a long time since I have been there. I do miss it now that I have been back.

Cruising the antique shops, of course I am looking for knives. Most shops were pretty high on price, like $95 for a beat up but serviceable remington stockman patern. I found on cool shop that was also a record store! He was pretty flexible on prices, so I brought home a new double edge razor, a gillette super speed in the box in great condition for $30. This one is gonna get used, so I can rotate between my brisish super speed and my Merkur.

Daniel, I can't wait to see those scales on the rigging knife! You got me all excited about the figure in them, I just hope they look as nice as you make them sound!

Congrats Big! It sure sounds like he's a decent guy and you will now have some property to clear with your new choppers! Better get that new knife paid for before the wedding planning starts...

Sounds like a great day! You know I am pretty into mines myself, I used to spend a ton of time looking for them. I don't go into the shafts... more interested in the mineralization and old buildings and junk laying around them.

Antiques too, sounds fun. I need to get my record player(s) going again, I miss the sound. Nice score on the razor!
 
Oh yeah, the teak! It isn't just over the top like maple can be but I was surprised by the chatoyant effect it had in the sunlight. I will say I don't think teak can get much better than this material.

I split the piece on my rock saw, it was super tough. I think the stabilization is very solid throughout the wood, it smelled like fiberglass when I cut it.

The stabilized wood is a new thing to me, I may have to try more. I have cut stone for years and "stabilized" was a bad word then but with wood it is an upgrade for sure!
 
Cool on the teak, I know it isn't like maple or koa, but it rarely has any figure at all.

Here are some pics of the mine/lunch. The building was built in 1855 or so and the mine has some large (for a mine, anyways) rooms near the entrance under the building before going into the shaft. This is where they put some tables to eat.

The ceiling structure was supported by old rail road track and large steel plates. Its been there a while, I don't know if this is original to the building or not, but its old...

Oh and the ceiling was about 5'10" high, I'm 6' tall, the lights hung down another 8" or so, it was careful maneuvering for me. My wife isn't even 5' tall, so she never noticed...

Xander cool pics! I have the money for my knife put away ready for Daniel! I am naming this one the "Sioux Warrior Survival Bowie". I am Sioux and have a tattoo of a wolf and Indian head with Sioux Warrior above it.This one is going to blow people away.It is going to be the ultimate survival Bowie!
 
Morning men.Thanks for all the congratulations! I am headed up to Marquette today to take my daughter shopping. She has just over 1 month left of school so we are going to get her a lot of food. We bought the unlimited meal plan but she can not stand the food in the cafeteria. I know now not to purchase that next year. She is going through a hard time she roomed with her friend from Kindergarten and Sunday she dropped on her that she does not want to room with her next year.They have to pick who they want to room with by Friday. Her boyfriends sister will be a freshman next year so I told her to ask her. So it will be them two.So everything works for a reason!

Big, I can't wait to see the design! I'm part Black Foot myself, far removed but my mother biological father (she's adopted) is/was half. I've tried finding out more, but that is very dificult.

I am more partial to a hatchet or hawk than a chopper, but then I haven't used a purose built chopper before. I may have to go get some old leaf spring and make one for myself soon. I'm just a fan of smaller knives, so I never really thought about them much.

Daniel, how has your chisel grind been holding up on your choppers? What type of edge are you puting on them?

I'm part Cherokee here, even have a CDIB Card to prove it, lol. My grandmother even spoke Cherokee, she gave us a parrot that did as well! :D



OK Choppers... I grew up using hatchets and such to chop wood but one day we got a USMC Hospital Corps Bolo Knife (chisel ground too!) and I realized how nice a heavy chopper is. To me big choppers are almost a cross between a machete and a hatchet. I realize a lot of people think they are a marketing thing but I strongly disagree and find them very useful. Next year if we use our fireplace more I am going to make a big chopper to replace my hatchet for chopping kindling.

I used to cut a ton of mesquite, it is super tough wood and I preferred the chopper over our axe, hatchet or saw for quick removal at the base. We would then dig up the roots with the rounded Bolo's tip... that is where I got the idea for my original choppers.

The chisel does great on choppers, I have had some great customer feedback. I like to go from a near zero edge near the handle to a thicker tip, I put on a flat bevel then remove some steel behind the edge for a slight convex. I was told one of my 5/16" choppers would slice a soda straw down the middle and still chop wood! I put a steep zero bevel on the tip of the last couple, I like that feature as well.



OK sidetracked...

In St.Thomas I had hundreds of tropical plants and many were wild found and dug up with my compact machete, I had the one knife for cuttings, transplanting and whatever else. Mango roots run very deep, one day we spent hours following a taproot down 4 feet before we chopped it... it lived too! You have to graft a good mango to the wild stock otherwise they taste like turpentine though, I found that out the first time I found a wild grove... they have to be bred for taste. <---- now that's off topic, lol!
 
Off to West Point tomorrow for a conference on tactical negotiations. Sounds super interesting.
 
Daniel you know I am still partial to your kick ass convex grinds On both sides of the blade.This new one is going to get a lot of work this year, well as much as my back can take.

Man Big, you are up late! Although I can imagine just sitting on the couch trying to deal with pain, been there, done that. Hope your doing ok and just had too much coffee!

I'm just vegging out on the couch battling some severe munchies right now. I think a big bowl of Kix will take care of that. See Daniel, my wife is right, I don't need to order another knife, the anxiety you are causing me is almost unbearable! I'm up constantly checking the site, my email rings instantly on my phone, I'm just so excited about the knife! I am really very curious about the teak not having seen it in person, you sure make it sound nice! This has been a fun project, for sure!
