Fakery!!

Hello ! Maybe somebody found a banged up Tidioute knife, saved the blade and spring, and created the rest himself ? Counterfeit ? Anyone with a glass eye you know where knows that this is not aa authentic Tidioute. Spanish, Pakistani, Chinese, copy ? Of what ? If so why can´t they be found on Wish, Alibaba, or E-Bay ? Relax people, take a deep breath, and just say no....MD.

Who knows where some of these knives come from??? Mechanic's specials?? Feverish nightmares??
Some have elements of reality, and some have origins that are hard, or impossible, to trace!!
Have you got one, or more?? Post it/them here and tell us your story!!

Here is one that has a mixed message!! 🤔 The Dog's-head rear Bolster, implies Ka-bar, whose predecessor was Union Cut Co, but the knife is marked Tidioute!! 😲 And the pattern and front bolster are quite the pieces of sculpture!! ;) A cool knife, but an apparent mixed-breed construction!!View attachment 1693162View attachment 1693163

While I don't necessarily think it is a production knife, I do think it may be all period-made. It's too outlandish (sticks out like a sore thumb, but in a good way!) to be made to fool anyone, but was certainly crafted by a good mechanic.

Its an art knife of sorts, made in the art nouveau style that was popular at the turn of the century,

Charlie- could that be faked? its so well done?

Hard to say whether the OP knife is a forgery actually!
A forgery of what??!!
Perhaps it should be considered a stand-alone work of art!! Until we see another like it, we won't know. Maybe it's the work of an artistic genius craftsman!
It certainly doesn't have the only sculpted bolsters we've ever seen! Look at this Horn-handled knife stamped C. Maselli , which came from the Imperial Schrade collection: or so I am told!!
I think the name "Maselli" comes up as a person from Frosolone, Italy, who was a knifemaker, and accompanied, somehow, the founders of Imperial!!C Maselli 1.jpgC Maselli 2.jpg
It came up for sale at the time the Schrade collection was being dispersed around 2005 or 2006 if I remember!

Whatever it is, I don’t think counterfeit is the correct word choice to describe it. Who would go through so much worthy effort to attach a Tidioute blade to a Ka-bar handle? Kind of like putting a 426 Hemi in a Mustang and trying to pass it off as an original? Either it is legit or perhaps someone re-bladed it for some other reason than trying to pass it off as something it was not? The blurry connection between the brands leads me to think it could be real.

If the dogs head bolster knife was just made for fun from other knife parts, what frame pattern was the handle made from? The Tidioute blade looks like an English Jack but would the spring have come from the same knife? If the maker had the knowledge and tools to grind and heat treat a spring from scratch, why wouldn’t they also make a blade? The handle has a toothpick curve to it maybe?
Also, are the bolsters nickel silver or stainless? I can see the pin is a slightly different colour of metal.

The psychology of a knifemaker, or a knifefaker; topics for much discussion!!

Indeed it was Charlie, yet the earlier productions had many issues. A great motor really, just a little too soft for my tastes.

If you don't own a copy of this book you're asking for trouble. Plus it's a really good read. Lot's of knowledge between the covers.

I've found a few over the years. I have a couple that I'm not sure of. But prices of the really hard to find stuff just invite fakes.

Thanks Kevin eisman eisman !!! After you posted and I saw it, I found one on the big river site and ordered it. It arrived yesterday (Friday). What a great book just full of information, tips, tricks, etc. It'll keep me busy all weekend reading it.
