Fall’s Around the Corner!--Giveaway...

Fall is right around the corner and the students are back in school. High school and college football are upon us once again and today in Ohio we are having breezy 60 degree weather after a week of upper 80’s. I feel extremely blessed as I recently scored a middle school teaching position after almost 20 years in the construction industry. What a change of pace! Oh well. Onto the interesting knife-related stuff…

Since I take away from here more than I contribute, I thought I’d have a little giveaway. I’d be interested in hearing one of your worst or best experiences having to do with school days (or daze, depending on how you got through it!) Let’s try to keep it clean, friendly and appropriate as I’m going to have my daughters pick the 4 winners and their knives on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010.

Since I lurk more than I contribute, ANYONE can play; I don’t care how many posts you have. Your post # will be your entry. You at least have to respond to this thread. If you’re reading this you can play.

Up for grabs is a Case 6347 Red bone 9 dot, Case XX 6202 ½ 8 Dot with Custom scales by MM, Case 32087, and a SAK Farmer

Good luck, happy posting, and have a great Labor Day weekend!

Matt

Congratulations on the new job and thanks for a generous give away. Please count me in.

'Grats on the new job

Best school related experience: The sound and aroma from opening a beer after having presented my Master degree thesis! This, or seeing by boy leaving for it's first day at school, with a backpack almost as big as he was :D

Worst: The day, at kindergarten, when my yogurt opened in my lunch bag and the mess it made; the whole class was looking at me...what a shame! Must be the worst experience because because I still remember it after...32 years :o

Anyway, thanks for this great giveaway!!!

Congrats on the new job! And, thanks for doing a give away. Count me in!

True story-I met a young(14yrs old) lady in high school back in '79. I knew instantly that I was going to marry her. So, I calmly walked over and told her so. She, thinking me to be daft and quite mad, ran me off that first day.:D But, being the persistent soul that I am, I made myself a pest until she agreed to go out with me. We'll be celebrating our 28th anniversary on November 24th this year. Persistence pays off!!:D:D

My wife and I just sent our first born off to Kindergarden and her backpack was just like your boys-huge. I don't get it. They're too young for homework and book carrying at that age. The only homework they should get for the first couple of years is to play and play some more!

In September of 1953, Mom drove me to first grade for my first three days. On the fourth day she reminded me of the way home and I was to walk it by myself. When the final bell rang, I stepped outside, looked both ways, and marched down the street exactly 180 degrees in the wrong direction. I was soon hopelessly lost and crying my eyes out. Two very nice ladies stopped and got me home. I ended up going to their church. The next day, I chose correctly and got most of the way home, when a turkey vulture tried to grab me by the head. That first week was rough.
Oh, BTW, I would love that 6347! Thanks for a good thread; I am anxious to read some more tales.

I think one of my saddest days was in kindergarten when my parents were advised that I had little to no talent for finger painting! It was a day I've had to live with since. Oh, the shame...

Congrats on helping to give back to our community. Seems it's catching! (Kind of like those school epidemics!)

I'm in. Great giveaway and teachers don't get paid nearly enough.

Good luck with the new career.

I hated school. All of it. Except for one thing. I had a great teacher early on who taught me to love books. As a result I became a self educated man in a manner similar to Louis l'Amour, I've read thousands of books and even written a few, Never finished school but I have raised two kids who do very well academically speaking. Thank you Mrs. Filiatreault. Thank you mshambone for the chance.

Three greatest days of all - last day of high school, undergrad and grad school.

I'm in, thanks.

I was a volunteer firefighter in high school. The morning of graduation I went to a firecall and barely made it back for the ceremony. I had time to wash the soot off my hands and face but I smelled like a fireplace! My girlfriend and Mother met me at the gymnasium locker room with a change of clothes so I would at least look nice even though I stank. Oh, I have been with that girlfriend for 23 years now :-)

Thanks for being a teacher.

The memories that comes to mind first was in 1988. I was in my sophomore year of high school. It was winter, big snow storm, already three feet of snow on the ground (it had snowed through the night). I get up and realize I was late!! It was usually about a 25 minute walk to school, and I had about 7 minutes left until class started!! Now, the 25 minutes was at a nice, slow, casual pace chatting with friends all the way there. i could cut that time in half if I hustled, but with three feet of snow on the ground? Well, off I went. I was lucky that, unlike the old story our parents told us, it was DOWN hill to school. LOL. I sludge through the snow at a painfully slow pace. My legs are killing me because of the effort of having to power through almost waste deep snow. The streets were plowed, so I took to them for the most part, but the traffic was still busy (morning rush hour, so it was a lot of running through drifts and mounds created by the plows. I finally get to the last stretch. I'm about a block and a half away, and it's a really steep descent. I put my school bag on my chest, jump to the floor, and basically "sled" down. I arrive at the school, and I'm only 5 minutes late. I get to the door, and it's locked!!
DAMN!! I have to go all the way around the building to get to the main entrance. I get there, and that door is locked too.
Wait a minute!!
I look around, and the lights are out. I walk over to the parking lot, and it is empty. The school is closed. I am frustrated but relieved at the same time. However, now I have a heck of a trek home, UPHILL!! In the snow!! I get there, and my mom greets me at the door. She had heard the siren signalling no school early in the morning, but never said anything to me as I usually woke up when I heard it. As I ran out of the house, she stuck her head out the window and tried to get my attention, but was having a bout with laryngitis, so I didn't hear her.
LOL.
ANother school experience was in college. Once again, i woke up in a panic because I was late!! I jump out of bed, hurry to get dressed, and ran out to the bus stop. College was a few towns over, so I had to take public transportation. Once again, this takes place in winter, and while it wasn't snowing, it was F-R-E-E-Z-I-N-G!! So, there I am at the bus stop, thinking about what I am going to tell my teacher about being late, when it dawns on me that the bus hasn't passed by yet!! There was usually a bus every five minutes. Then it occurs to me that there is no one at the bus stop! There's no traffic!! There's no bus coming!! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE!!
Then I remember when I did the night before, and realized I am NOT late for school. there is no school on Sunday!!! And it was 5:45 in the morning!!
LOL. I guess I go into hibernation mode in the winter time!! Haha

Thanks for this chance, interesting idea too:thumbup:

Well, you could say we are in education of some sort for life, but my most significant point was my first day at school. It turned out as a shock. There had been some build up beforehand, parents, brothers and gran all telling me I would have to go to school soon. I wasn't exactly keen, there were always interesting things at home it seemed to me. First day was long and bewildering but I got through it. Back home at the dinner table I proudly announced I had been to school. Murmers of approval. Problem was I thought going to school was like having a polio innoculation, you did it just once:eek: Roars of laughter from my family, then the horrifying&baffling idea that i would have to be there to at least 16 likely longer:barf: Talk about life sentence:D I'm still in shock to this day....

Best day of school... Second week of June each year.
Worst day of school... August 22, 2006 First day of my teaching career. Called a few old teachers that afternoon and apologized for being a jerk all those years ago.

Thanks for the chance and good luck with your new job.

That's really cool that you are going from construction to teaching. I'm a jobsite superintendent for a commercial GC and my wife teaches. The thought crosses my mind all the time! (not an entry, but thanks for keeping this place great!)

I guess my best school experience was opening the mail and learning that I had passed the bar exam. This was right after learning that my best friend had not passed, so I was fearing the worst. If you don't pass, you spend six more months studying so you can take it again. Three strikes, and you are out.

One of the saddest days I had was the day I graduated from college. I did not want it to end. I'd go back and relive it if I could.
