Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the review. I'm really liking this one. An F-1 will be next unless I somehow luck my way into an NL-4.

i've yet to read a bad review about fallknivens.

the ease of the coating coming off is often brought up, but as i don't need a black blade, it doesn't worry me. if i "need" to temporarily blacken a blade for some inexplicable reason, well, there's always boot polish.

G'day Brian.

I'm sorry to hear the coating is such crap :thumbdn:

Pity KSF didn't have a satin A1 in stock, otherwise that would have been the one you received

Cosmetic issues aside, it sounds like the knife (ie robustness, edge holding, design) is proving its' worth :D

I'm looking forward to your ongoing experiences with this one

Kind regards
Mick

Me too. I've read a lot of good reviews was why I was so looking forward to this one. Great knife, I couldn't care less about the coating coming off. It's just that if it is going to come off this easy I want to get it all off before I start doing food prep with it.

No worries Mick :)

Even had they had the Satin one in stock I might still have chosen this one considering the nature of things... it would still been one of those "six-of-one-half-dozen-of-the-other" situations. I figured if the coating was tough no biggie I've used lots of coated knives, and if it wore pretty quickly no biggie either I'd just remove it. This is coming off faster than I expected but no big deal.

Oh, the knife itself is doing just fine

I love the weight, weight distribution, ergonomics, edge, and toughness...I love how this knife handles all together.

Great review and pics mist.......Ive been looking pretty hard at the bigger Falknivens lately.

I have a WM1 and love it, and a forum member sent me an F1 to play with.....Falknivens are very nice. This one looks like just what im needing. Thanks!!

Got my F1 few months back wich was my first fixed Fäll, and Im definitely buying more. F1 just oozes of functionality. It's not the fanciest showpiece, but you just love it in your hand. Only concern of mine is the hardness of VG-10.

Because it's too hard or too soft?

And isn't the A1bl laminated VG10?

Thanks J, glad you liked it. I've been watching the Fallkniven reviews for a while now.

Funny, it was an H-1 that started the converstaion with Mick and I, then I got hung up between the F-1 and the A-1 on the trade. I'll be getting another later...probably an F-1. I like the F-1 blade but I like the H-1 handle so I'm still thinking and looking.

The plain-jane functional look was a lot of the appeal dor me.

The high RC was a concern for me too, but so far I'm loving the knife and it's proving as tough as I've been hearing they are.

If he's like me he's worried about it being hard, one of the reasons I was hesitant about going with a G3 model. I'll know more when it's time to sharpen it but so far I'm loving the knife.

Yes, laminated VG10.

Fallkniven VG10 blades are the best blades I've ever worked with. Bar NONE. And I have a lot of blades. I have an H1 that went through skinning, quartering, some boning (had an S1 that assisted there) and butchering a doe this year and it still shaved afterward, and still has not been touched (the edge, that is). They are THE hunting knife for me. Both the S1 and H1 have gone through rib-cages like they were butter, and again, shaved afterwards.

I will admit, though, that they ARE my hunting knife. That is all I do with them. Have an A1 as well, but it is a little large for a hunting knife.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I didn't get the A-1 for a hunting knife exactly but it will get to participate anyway at some point.

Well, I'm no sharpening guru, and I've had no problems keeping my heavily-used PHK and H1 shaving sharp, and they're both 3G. The F2 is VG10, and hasn't been a problem to sharpen after lots of fish.

Yep, it is sweet.

Lol, I don't like for them to look new for long but this one is going quicker than I expected :)

Glad you enjoyed it. I was torn between the F-1 and the A-1 for a few but went with the larger one first because it filled the void. I'll be getting the F-1 later...but more because of want than need. I'd like to get an NL-4 but it's a little beyond my reach at the moment.

Yeah, because you really "needed" this one, so you would have at least 1 knife :D:D:D

Yeah, well...this one did actually fill a void in my knives :D. (I thought long and hard about the choice) And so far it has done so very well.

I have a few knives the size of the F-1 that I am really very happy with now...I've just heard so much about the F-1s that I really just want to see what they're like. It never hurts to get a little happier :) , and at the very least I'm already sure I won't hate it

I also have an A-1 but i haven't had a chance to use it that much yet. I have the plain finish blade and i've only used it for food prep so i can't comment on the version you have.
Thanks for the nice pictures and review on some harsher use.
I don't know if i will use mine that way for a while only because i have a couple of other knives that i prefer at the moment for hard use.
I would recommend trying some oven cleaner to get rid of the coating. I know that people use it to get rid of anodizing on AN fittings for automotive and aircraft plumbing.
Maybe just put a little on a portion of the spine and see if it does anything to the coating.

Whilst I don't own a S1, I do own & use the H1 and I couldn't agree more with your views of the H1 as a hunting knife.

It does cut through the ribs on a goat like a hot knife through butter :D

It is also my preferred bushcraft knife

Thanks for the tip on the oven cleaner, I may just try that.

Thanks Mick for the great in-use shots and video of the H-1...I may just have to get one of those next instead of an F-1, I really like the looks of that blade and the handle.

.

Great thread and review.

Yea the only drawback to the coated blades is how fast it wears off but that doesnt bother me too much. The VG10 convex is not only tough as nails but a great slicer too !

My girl got me an S1 for Valentines day , it is one badass piece of steel. I have beat the heck out of it to see what it can take and other than the coating and the rubber handle getting a bit mawed it has held up fine.

I also made a leather sheath for it.

Great knives , so great they are endorsed for use by our Armed Forces.

Great review - thanks. I am a big Fallkie fan and once had the A2

LEt it go, which was the right thing to do at the time, as I only bought it to make a choice between it and a couple of leukus

Couldn't aford them all, and chose the leukus. Which I have since migrated from and have started using a billhook more

I have long wanted a go on the A1 - soon maybe :)

Incidentally: from my own humble opinion - the TK1 is by streets the best knife Fallkniven make

Thank you, glad you liked the post.

Oh, I'm getting over the coating, I'm loving the knife. It is definitely a great slicer.

Thanks glad you enjoyed it. At one time I would have loved the A-2, but now the A-1 will get more use.

The TK-1 is a good looking design but...my big infatuation is with the NL-3.

I did a little fire starting under very wet conditions today in my front yard during a break between storms. As you can see the wood is soaking wet because I broke one of the cardinal rules of fire starting just to prove a point about the value of fatwood under adverse conditions. I collected all of my fuel from the wet ground and from pools of water.

IMG_8174.jpg

The piece of bark I used for a base was also soaking wet after being out in the rain for days.

IMG_8175.jpg

I used Fatwood for tinder and even it has been out in the rain for days just like it is.

IMG_8176.jpg

I'm still working with a factory edge that is doing really well.

IMG_8179.jpg

The spine throws great sparks. There are a lot of marks in the coating but no damage at all to the knife itself.

IMG_8165.jpg

This is the video I shot. Ignition happens at about 2min 40sec or so...the other 7 minutes is the fatwood catching the wet wood on fire.
