Fallkniven A-1

The TK-1 is a good looking design but...my big infatuation is with the NL-3.

personally, i'm lusting after a TK-5/6, but will be "settling" for a VG-10 WM1 (i've been saving up for an S1 and a WM1 for a while now, every time i get the cash, something happens which costs me $$ and i have to put the knife purchase back, again. i have other blades i can use in the interim).

the Northern Lights series are definatly lovely looking knives, however from what i can gather they are essentially the same as the others in the fallkniven lineup, but with a stacked leather handle at some substantial premium on the cost. i'll grant you the NL series is a full convex grind and lacks the bevel in the A1/S1/F1 series, how much this would effect performace is debatable. i'm on the "minimal difference" side of the argument.

as i see it:

NL1 Thor = No Other FK Equivalent
NL2 Odin = A2
NL3 Njord = A1
NL4 Frej = S1
NL5 Idun = F1

if the NL series were made in 3G steel rather than Fallkniven's standard Laminated VG-10, i could understand the additional cost and would probably buy them on the basis of the steel used.

as it stands, it seems like a lot of $$$ just for a stacked leather handle.

that said: if i was rich enough, i'd buy a full set of NLs in a heartbeat.

The NL5, Idun is my dream knife. If only they had it in their powder steel. Why is it so expensive? Surely leather handles can't cost that much.

i think it's the full convex grind that's a bit harder and takes a bit more time to do.

that and FK adds on a premium to the NL knives coz they're "exclusive" and "premium" and all that.

still, i rekon an S1 will serve me just as well as an NL4 and the WM1 will serve me just as well as a TK-5/6.

Oh, I'm sure the A-1 will serve me very well and likely better than an NL-3 in this climate zone...I just have a "thing" for leather handles......

The TK5 is brilliant Sambo - wait til you feel it drop into your hand - perfect three finger knife with a nice handfilling feel to it

I found the Idun to be too broad, though it is still lovely, and so I sold it. I like the H1 a lot too, just not quite as much as the TK1 :D:D

But, you knw, its Fallkniven - theres never much in it

dammit. i wish you hadn't told me that......:grumpy: i really like the look of the TK5/6, it's pure sexiness compared to the WM1, which is a kind of bland looking rubber handled utility knife (but a very well made and functional blade for all that)

well, i'm in the process of quitting smoking*, so with the ca$h i'll save, i could get a TK6 in a couple of weeks.

as for a TK5, that cocobolo handle is just too damn expensive. i'll rehandle a TK6 if it comes to that and save ~US$100....

*started the Zyban course a couple of days ago, QUIT Day is Saturday:cool:

....Incidentally: from my own humble opinion - the TK1 is by streets the best knife Fallkniven make
Whilst i don't own a TK1, I do have the TK2 (the cheaper thermorun handled twin) and agree. IMO its the most versatile 4 inch blade Fallkniven makes

G'day Ivan

The H1 shown is in 3G, which I prefer, since it will hold its' edge for about twice as long as VG10. Personally I haven't found it to be twice as hard to sharpen either. So personally I find the age old dilema of edge retention v's ease of sharpening to be in favour of 3G over VG10. Please bear in mind that others on the Fallkniven forum don't feel this way :D

With a highly refined/polished edge, I haven't found it to be brittle either.

Corrosion resistance is as good as VG10.

I'm not in a position to advise whether or not the upgrade in performance is worth the difference in price to you.

For me it is

After looking at your pics i think im breaking down and need to try out a Fallkniven:p

Thanks again for the great pics Mick! And... thanks a lot for momentarily driving me nuts too. For a minute there I was once again torn between two for my next one. I really like the looks of that TK2, I love the blade shape a lot and think with its size and shape that it would be a great companion for the A1. However I could only find it in G3 and that's beyond me right now so once again I'm back to an F1 for my next one :)

Mist you wont be disappointed with an F1. Mine has really surprised me. MUCH better knife than I originaly thought it would be.

There is a review/comparison of the F1, H1, and one of the northern lights (NL1 I think) on youtube. It is by a Fin I think dressing out a deer and cutting out the backstraps. He actualy found the F1 to be the easiest to use and the best performer at the tasks. The handle on the NL was very slick in use. To him, the H1 also required a much tighter more exhausting grip in use to maintain control. Wish I knew how to post a link.

Thanks Mike,

Between all the good I've read about the F1, and how much I like the A1, I was pretty sure I would like it. It looks like a great design for general use and bushcraft, I hope to find out soon...:)

The blade is excelent. Why oh why did they have to give it such a terrible ugly sheath like that? Why don't knife makers take a lesson from esee sheaths? The leather sheath they offer for the a1 is nice looking though.
