Been jonsin' for one for years and I think I'm finally gonna pull the trigger on a Fakllkniven A1.

But I don't know if I should procure a black ceracoat or an unfinished blade.

Please help me decide by telling me which finish you'd choose, and why.

Thanks fellas.

It depends entirely on what you want from the blade.

The black coating wears off with use, and it will make the blade look "ugly" - but that shouldn't matter in a user blade. On the other hand, the coating protects against corrosion and makes the blade non-reflective if you're going for that tactical look. The black version is also a bit more expensive, at least in some places.

I hung up my Ninja suit when I turned 50 bro...so the "tactical look" is not a requirement. Unless there is some major babe+++ out there who gets turned on by ceracoat I'll go for the unfinished blade. It's stainless laminate so -- with a little care -- how corroded is it gonna get.

Thanks.

I'd go woth the unfinished, I have an f-1 an opted for the unfinished version, it's plenty stain resistant on it's own, and all the coated knives I've owned all started to look pretty bad after some heavy use

Uncoated for me every time.

With minor maintenance even Carbon Steel blades can avoid corrosion and these are 420J2 wrapped around VG10.

Heck, I've TRIED to get mine to take some kind of patina and haven't had any success thus far.

It' s stainless steel , it won't corrode .

Try using it near and in salt water, and you might have better... or is that worse, luck. :D But yeah, with a little care, like not leaving the knife wet in the sheath, it won't corrode in normal conditions.

Uncoated - you will dazzle the babes with the sparkles glinting off your knife :)

I would go with the uncoated blade. Looks better after years of use and doesn't have the tactical look, which makes folks around my area go:eek:

How do the "rubber" (I know they're not rubber) handles hold up? Has anyone here had one for over 10 years? I only ask because I have a Buck and a SOG with (I believe) Kraton handles that are starting to feel like they might be breaking down.

I've been thinking I need to get a Fallkniven for a while, since they get such great reviews, but the price difference between the Kraton handles and the Micarta is pretty huge for me- on the other hand, I don't want another knife that has a limited shelf life, either.

Upon further reflection, perhaps I shall elect to aquire the coated ninja edition.

Hey Guys..

Just for the sake of flogging a dead horse...

Uncoated!

You can always spray paint it.

After seeing that picture CitizenQ, I would have to say definitely the coated Ninja one;). No, I am just kidding. The only blades I ever even consider to have coated are the non-stainless ones, and even most of my non-stainless ones are uncoated.

Is that ninja wearing high heels - or is it specialty tree/wall climbing tactical wear?

Ignoring the global warming in the southern hemisphere of my being, I have ordered an uncoated Fallkniven A1.

You can also buy just the blade and put on whatever scales you want, micarta, G10, wood, etc.

As for the coated or uncoated I'd go with uncoated.

The coating does not protect the cutting edge of the knife, so the cutting edge will rust just as fast as the one on the uncoated blade. If you are concerned with camo for commando missions, Krylon spray paint is more versatile and easier to change or touch up.

The coating is strictly for looks. If you like the way it looks, you should get it; it doesn't hurt anything. (I like the uncoated look better.)

Hey Q, congrats on your purchase. be sure and post a review after you've had a chance to put it through it's paces. Some of us might be looking in the same direction you are going. :D

Coatings prevent penetration.

No coating ever.

My WM1 with a kydex neck sheath is hanging around my neck for about 7 years now, and apart from some scratches on the handle no signs of breaking down. I believe the handle material is called thermorun.

As for the original question: uncoated for me!
