Fallkniven A1 Video Test...No Destruction....Yet

fishface5: This was the first time I have seen a spider this big up there. There are a lot of spiders there but this one got my attention. It makes me wounder what else is lurking in these woods.

The A-1 is indeed a solid blade. Nice to see the use.

I arrived back from my trip. The A1 did a fantastic job in the field for it's
smaller size. I was able to do all your basic camp chores just as with a larger knife.

A great knife so far.

If you started off with pics like these and a casual tone about personally reviewing the knives, you would have gotten a better initial response a few months back.

Do some practical outdoor-technique vids and less intentional destruction ones

3Guardsmen: Thanks for telling me what it is. I though they were babies on it's
back. I tried to get a close look at it but I couldn't make them out. There must have been a lot of them on her. Thanks for the link.

Nordic Viking: I plan to do more field testing on my test knives. I would have liked to video the A1 in the field but I went by myself and I couldn't carry all the camera gear I needed with me. My camera man was unavailable for the trip.

hawkinsa21: I look forward to it. I had an older model briefly that I bought at the gun show. but I never got to use it.

Hey Noss,

Nice pictures! Looks like you had a fun trip! Do you have any more pics (or vids...)?

jgkort: I had a fun trip. Here are 2 closeups. A small dent occurred at some point.
I used the A1 to dig the fire pit. There is a little rock in the ground so it may have happened during this. I was able to mostly sharpen it out.It needs a little more work to fully remove it. VG-10 is very easy to sharpen as most have said.

I circled the dent in red you can only see this on the website. http://knifetests.com/page25.html

I agree with Nordic Viking. I could not care less about destruction photos or videos. To me, that is more about show than reality. However, your trip into the woods told me a lot more about the A1 than a destruction video ever could do. Please continue such activities when you get to the other knives, esp. the Mistress.

And BTW, the other added benefit (besides perhaps more respect from others here) of NOT destroying a knife is that at the end of your test, you still have something useable.

on_the_edge: The A1 has shown it is a good knife so far in the field testing.
However I still have other unanswered questions about it. The only way I can answer these questions is to perform a destruction test on it.
I want to know the total potential and limits of a knife. You can't find the breaking point if you do not break it.

Or as it was stated. "You have to exceed the limit to find the limit."

I plan to do much more field testing on my knives. This is one piece of the puzzle and for some this is all they want to know. I know there is a lot of controversy in destructive testing but it is valid. Some understand it. Some don't. This is the way the world turns. If everyone agreed there would be no debate. All tests are subjected to debate. Without debate no test or method would be valid. It all comes down to the individual and what they are looking
for. What works for one does not always work for all.

Well said. Thanks for ALL of the testing noss4. Field testing serves one purpose and destruction testing, another. Together, they provide a comprehensive picture of the knife's capabilities.

Hey Noss,

That dent doesn't look all that dramatic. Looks like you put the A1 through some good use there. It must have done very well as an all-round camp-knife! Thanks for those pics!

A fabulous evaluation so far! Certainly formatted in a manner that I can get my arms around.
With reference to....
"Or as it was stated. "You have to exceed the limit to find the limit."...
The key is to do one of two things:
1) See how much of the real-world testing that you are doing it takes before breaking or..
2) Accelerate the real world testing through lab-based destructive testing IF you can draw a relationship between the two.
As I've stated in the past, it's the relevance that matters.

A chunk of foam doesn't test as being particularly dangerous in a lab, but as NASA now knows, traveling at high speed it can take out a spacecraft.

jgkort: Your welcome. The dent is very minor. It's not the first knife I have dented the edge on during hard use in the field it's no big deal but I wanted to point it out.
If I chipped the edge then it would be a big deal.
The A1 did a great job in the field for it's size. It accomplished a lot of tough tasks with minimal effort.

Moodino: I Gotcha

jaislandboy: Your welcome. After you see a Spider like that out there you look over your shoulder to check what is behind you ?

I'm impressed with that Fallkniven VG-10....I never thought VG-10 was such a tough steel.

I'm impressed with that Fallkniven VG-10....I never thought VG-10 was such a tough steel.

Fallkniven uses a three layer laminate consisting of hardened VG-10 sandwiched between two layers of softer, spring tempered 420J. This laminated blade is tougher than VG10 alone.

So far Fallknivens laminate VG-10 seems tough. I'm going to have to wait and see how it does in the destruction test. There is only so much WOOD can reveal but I have see other people post photos of their knives chipping out and breaking on Wood and batoning wood with wood.
