Fallkniven A1???

Another vote for the zytel sheaths, clean and simple and imprevious. Also you can find on eBay or knife resellers blade blanks and do your own custom handle. Many sheath manufacturers can do custom leather or kydex also.

You could always make your own, from a kit:

I made this one, and just did a simple cord wrap handle, and have been VERY pleased. I made a foldover Kydex sheath, using my oven a piece of foam, and a heavy cutting board. Steel is AUS8, which has taken a very nice edge, and holds it well.

A crappy pic is here:

I gifted my Little Brother a satin S1, and he takes it around the world with him in his travels, atleast when he can get away with it! It is still going strong...I showed him the A2, and his jaw dropped...his first words were..."I need one of these!" Again, the A1 is an awesome blade...but I have learned that for ME, I like a smaller blade, and a BIG blade..not one in the middle. Gene
EDIT: I am currently looking to get into an S1 and A1..just to add to the collection..on top of looking for all the Northern lights series...I cant say enough about the Fallkniven line!!!
My current Fallkniven collection, A2, Frej, Idun, H1, and custom F1...

Wow, great set of Fallknivens you got there

I would have to admit i very much dislike the zytel sheaths. The clasp that holds the handle at the top (not sure of the real name of this doohicky) needs to be pulled hard for the clasp to undo, and sometimes requires 2 hands. I do, however, like the actual sheath part. It's simple and it works. Plus, I don't buy my knives according to what sheath it comes with I buy a knife for the knife.

I prefer the old-style Fallkniven Kydex sheaths. They are a normal-looking Kydex sheath on a nylon drop loop with a nylon strap w/snap to secure the knife.

The Fallkniven Zytel sheath is just plain ugly in my eyes. I haven't tried one (yet) so I can't comment on how practical they are.

As much as I understand the concept behind the Zytel sheaths I think they could be better crafted. Boxy construction makes them noisy (blade rattles) and the molded locking tab is by no means secure. If I undo the strap arround the handle and shake my F1 grabbing the sheath... it doesn't take much effor to send the knife flying. That said, they are not fitted to be carried upside down in the pack strap (not that I am going to try that with an A1, but it should be a great place to carry the F1).

As far as I know, Kydex is as tough and impervious to the elements as the Zytel, but again, I could be wrong.

Mikel

PD: Planning on making my own kydex sheaths as soon as I get all set up.

I have an F1,2S1's and 2 A1's.These knives have served me in every environment Canada has to offer without fail.
Here's a pic of me batoning frozen birch last winter with one of my A1's.

Sometime down the line, I need to get myself an A1/A2 to keep my F1 company :)

As for the sheath thing, I didn't really mind the stock zytel one as it was leaps better than some of the other sheaths I've received with knives, but I had a kydex one made for my F1 so I could carry a firesteel on the sheath. I have found that my F1 is much more secure in its new sheath, and I prefer molded sheaths to box sheaths in general because they just fit better (IMO).

As an all-round field knife, the A1 is just about perfect. Actually, it's perfect, but I don't want it to go to Fallkniven's head. :D

For camping, I also take a Frosts Clipper. I like thin blades too. ;)

I carry all my Fallknivens in Spec-ops survival sheaths.A little boiling water and they fit like gloves.

Sav, Are you in Nova Scotia, man that looks like one of the atlantic provinces.

If you're looking for a knife in the A1 size range, that one's about as good as it gets.
I have an F1 , an S1 & an A1 & they're all very good knives.
The S1 is kind of a scaled down A1.
I use the F1 most out of those three, but just because I like a knife in that size.

The A1 is the brute of those three.

Nice that you have an old model VG10 A1. :)

Yeah...that's one of the older solid VG10 A1 models.
I understand that the laminated models are stronger, but I think it would take something like King Kong to break that one!

It's a heck of a knife & I've been very happy with it.

I have the smaller F1 and its laminated blade steel and geometry are wonderful! It's one of those knives I wouldn't mind being "stuck" with if I could only have one. I will definitely end up owning an A1 in the future.

I have an A1 on the way! For anyone considering the purchase, I found a great deal at KnifeSupply.com They have the black A1 with Zytel sheath for $139.95. That's considerably ($30 or more) cheaper than my regular favorite mail-order places. I only ordered it yesterday, so I guess I should reserve final comment until I actually get the knife....

Welll....maybe it wasn't such a good deal. After nine days and no notification of shipment, I contacted KnifeSupply. They said the knife was out of stock. I wonder how long they were going to wait before they told me? No wonder the price was so good. It's easy to have great prices on things you don't have on hand to sell.

This is my first experience with KnifeSupply and I'm not too pleased so far. I'll keep you all posted on how this turns out. I was anxious to receive my new black A1!

Hey bro, did you try Knifecenter? A bit more expensive, but reliable.

They're one of my favorite places, but KnifeSupply had the same knife for $35cheaper ($140 vs. $175), so I thought I'd give them a try. I took a quick look around to see what people thought of them and found some very happy customers and some complaints... figured I'd roll the dice.

20% more money isn't exactly what I'd consider "a bit more expensive," or I would have bought from one of my favorite on-line knife shops. I decided to take a chance and try someone I haven't done business with yet in hopes of finding a new place to add to my list of favorites. As it stands right now, they probably won't make that list.... ;)
