Fallkniven Modern Bowie Knife

Well my friends, I got the dreaded loose handle on my MB10!!! It was annoying the heck out of me so I decided, why not try my hand at handle making. I’ve done one before with jute and epoxy but I wanted to try a solid block of micarta! This journey has been a hard one lol! Micarta is no dang joke. Holy moly. I had to find a piece large enough to work for my handle (wanted a hidden tang with max toughness). Here’s some shots at the progress:

I got it all fitted up and used marine Tex for epoxy (works awesome for gun bedding). Got all my initial shaping done and then began to do final shaping and polishing to 600grit. These pics are before the final polish.

I have since finished it up. I did not like how it looked with the light colored micarta so I used some leather dye to make it look weathered and dark and cool lol. I’m currently doing it’s first coat of boiled linseed oil. Will post final pics soon! It seriously came out awesome!!! The suspense, the suspense

Was wondering where you were....... Nice job there...👌....If my.Volcano handle ever shits the bed ill do the same I think...😉.......Hoping it doesn't though😜

Here it is as of this morning. I went for the aged wood look on the handle and I think I nailed it! The shape is what works for my hand for doing the tasks I require of a large blade, chopping, stabbing imaginary beasts, batoning, and basically fire starting. I can honestly say, this handle is stupid comfortable for my hands which if should be. Once I really get it done up and get it outside I’ll get some real glam shots.

Action shots...😜👌

This may come as a surprise but I didn’t even consider whether this handle would allow me to use my stock sheath. It dawned on me this morning to try, and by pure happenstance, it fits absolutely perfectly and allows the retention snap to connect with perfect tension.

Some really good work; honestly wish that knife already came with a proper handle material like G10 or micarta; getting basically kraton for $700 is what kept me away from this knife.

Thank you! I completely agree. The handle was by far the weak point of the knife. I was so disappointed that it came loose on mine. I am glad it did in hindsight as it allowed me to take on the challenge. I’m not sure I ever would have, even though I was tempted to, if that handle didn’t make my knife sound like a shaker. With the new handle, shaped by me for me, it is a whole new knife and will probably get much more use than it was. I was mostly using my Teddy 2 still for bigger knife shenanigans.

Got around to taking a couple photos in the natural light outside. I am seriously happy with how this came out. Not only does it feel awesome in hand, but it also looks much better than that rubber handle ever did.

I also shortened the top of the guard so I can thumb over if I ever want to without discomfort. The bottom guard is also slightly radiused for comfort on my hand as well. I really went for maximum fitment to my hand.

Great job.👍👍👍......Looks awesome👌👌👌

Thank you. I am very pleased for my 2nd handle ever and first time with micarta. I give YouTube knife making videos for the outcome you see lol.

If anyone is ever interested in the reasons why I chose that specific shape and style of handle I will explain, but otherwise I won’t bore you.

Ok, so I decided to go with a handle height over spine and angle so that when gripped very hard the blade is parallel/in line with my wrist. This allows for more thrusting stability. The end being above spine even higher allows for more chopping force if using it for that task (much like a hatchet is shaped). If you don’t believe me, go grip a knife with a traditional handle see how the tip of the blade is actually angled slightly down. I learned a lot about this in my younger years in martial arts. It’s kind of neat.
