My new BK5 just showed up to work. Really like this knife. Very light. Can't wait to strip it and get the micarta on.

One thins that I noticed as soon as I took it out... is that... the sheath is too short for the knife.... is this a known issue? I had never heard this before.. but after I noticed the problem, I just did a search and see that others have reported this issue for some time...

The top of the knife is about 1/2" or so longer than the plastic insert and it actually sticks through and cuts the nylon of the sheath on the bottom...

I don't think it's enough to actually be dangerous... but... it's definitely an oversight... I assume they just used the same sheath as the BK7 because it's close enough to work, while the BK9 sheath would be overkill?

Anyone else seen this? I'm actually a bit disappointed. Brand new sheath and it's already cut.... KABAR has always had much better attention to detail than this. :confused:

that must be a new sheath. doesn't look at all like mine.
 
I've never heard of that... I don't have my 7 yet, so I don't know if the sheath is the same or not, but THAT is just crazy!

I'd call either Ka-bar, or Sky, Goose, Nick, Al and see about getting a new sheath.
 
Must be a new type of camo design they put on the sheath, works so well even in pictures.

Oh boy, this again.... No I can't. I guess the forum is acting up again. Or my computer is totally retarded. Sorry bout that.

Back on topic: Is it the MOLLE backed sheath or the old style? If it's the old style I would call KA-BAR before I buy a new sheath, only because they should be more than happy to take care of that for you. If it is the MOLLE style, I would still call KA-BAR, but at the same time put in an order for either some new skin or kydex.
 
I just went through some of my inventory, and, of course, I'd already moved the one BK5 sheath I had to the big black pile of unused Becker sheaths so I couldn't be absolutely sure which one came out of the box.
That said, most of my inventory is a couple of months old at the max, and there seemed to be two large-sized sheaths -- the WAY big BK-9 sheath that is about 1.5 inches too long for a -5, and the BK7 sheath, which looks like it should fit a BK5, but when pushed to the top of the plastic sleeve like your photo, it does poke a hole in the cordura.
All of mine are black, by the way. I've never seen a green one.

ha. No worries.

Yeah it's the new style. Molle style, and even has the velcro/snap belt look. It seems to be the exact same sheath as my BK7... that is to say... made for a 7 inch knife.

I guess it's really not a huge deal... but does seem like bad design. Using the same sheath as the BK7 would be fine... but then redesign it and make it like 1/2" longer to accomodate both, ya know? *shrug*

I think a replacement sheath is going to have the same issue. The sheath doesn't seem to be out of spec or anything... the knife is just too long for the sheath that they give you. Maybe I'll get kydex, or maybe I'll just deal with this one. I don't think this will get a ton of use outside of food duties.
 
The reason for calling KA-BAR (IMO) is to get another one just to have around, because after market Cordura sheaths are expensive, and if you want a sheath permanently mounted to your backpack or something for your 7 (to be), and then one for when your not wearing/using whatever the other one is mounted to, you have it.

Wait, they are putting out new sheaths for the fullsize ones now? News to me. A few more pics would be nice to see the new hotness. I am sure that a phone call to Kabar or a message to Toooj would get you sorted very quickly.
 
I don't thin it's a 'new' sheath... it's the same thing as my BK7 sheath... Lemme grab a few more pics...

Now that I'm home, the BK5 is out on the patio getting the 'Gentlemen's Club Treatment'. :)
 
Yeah, that the new one (had to use IE to view the pics).

Drop KA-BAR or Toooj a line and start picking out your new sheath, that's what I would do. But don't tell one about the other. Just because.
