Yes, it should have been insured. But it wasn't. Apparently, this even happens with well-known dealers.
When I ship a knife, I insure it. If it's over $250 and PayPal was involved, I use signature confirmation.
And I tape boxes in such a way that tear and grab artists at the post office have their work cut out for them.
The lesson here, I guess, is that you need to get terms settled in detail before any shipping goes down.
Now, if the guy had told you he'd insure and then failed to do so, you would have everyone on your side. But that's apparently not the case.
