Farid CPM-REX 121 chopper

Holy Smokes!.. Now that's a monster. Looks like you could cleave just about anything in half, even a small car.

Hi Stu, my god I've just seen some of your knives on your web site, your work is really good, at some stage you'll have to forge me a large and thick blade ok. talk later

Some people have been asking what the lanyard tubes are made from , they are machined from solid bars of titanium.

Why so thick? Just me thinking outloud, but even at 1/4" thick, it would probably be unbreakable. Love the style, though.

I didn’t want it so thick at all, I wanted either ¼” thick or 5/16”, the fact is Crucible does not roll this steel that thin, it had to be cut from a thick plate, this was the thinnest section they could cut, so to reduce some weight I taper tang them both and ground the blades from 12mm at the recasso down to around 10mm at the tip of the blade and deeply hollow ground the top grind line.

wow! yes Farid, follow up with some testing results and pics.

Hi Patrick, today I finished the other blade as well, I'll take a couple of pics of the two together tomorrow.
I will try to take a few pics of the testing.
take care

Here is the final pic of the two knives before testing.
Take care all,

Today was a wonderful cutting competition day, Here is the first testing of the CPM-REX-121 chopper, pics showing a steel ‘Can’ being cut in half with no damage to the 68-70rc edge.
I hope you all enjoy the pics.
Thanks
Farid

Thanks guys I appreciate your support,
I very much doubt if I will make another chopper from CPM-REX-121as this steel is so expensive and hard to work with. Whoever ends up with these knives will have something very rare indeed.
Take care all

That is a one-of-a-kind chopper :)

I would love to handle it, it looks very comfy to chop.

It's very comfy, I made two of these, got another piece of REX-121 around 13" x 3/8" thick, price of CPM-REX-121 is just crazy but it is the first steel ever to hit 71.5RC. my REX-121 choppers are around 68 to 70RC on the edge.
take care
Farid

68-70 on the edge is by plain crazy :)

3/8 thick of the good stuff seems like a good thickness to work some magic, at that length it'll be a good camping chopper. It'll be interesting to see what you do with it.
