Farid CPM-REX 121 chopper

It's not 3/8", it started at 12.9mm which is over 1/2" thick, it is taper tang so it's not as heavy as you think. I be making a third CPM-REX 121 chopper at 13" long and that will be it I think in this steel.
take care

It 'a very interesting test Mr. Farid. I have a question on 2 types of steel that you use: CPM 10V and CPM REX-121. In your opinion, what is the best steel for strength of the board. What is more able to sharpen a razor with more satisfaction in pure cut. Thanks for the attention you dedicate to me.
:)

Terrific knife! Bravo! I'm sorry, Mr.Farid please tell me how to contact you? Thank you.

I will get the info together later today and post on here,
thank you sir

CPM-10v is a better choice when it comes to toughness but CPM REX 121 is the ultimate high wear resistant steel there is. I have made competition choppers from 10v and they cut metal no problem, take a look at the movie clip of this 10v chopper cutting 15mm copper pipe with no problems,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcCjUOp5F2U

Having said that at the BladeSports championships 2012 after competing I then did a small demonstrations to show the capabilities of the CPM REX 121 chopper, I am not sure if the whole thing was filmed or if people even took pictures, I still have one of the two REX 121 choppers I have made and took it to Atlanta with me.
I asked Donovan to bring with him a few steels cans so I could put on a demo for people to show the ability of the CPM REX 121 steel, the demo was to cut 6 steel cans in half. All went very well and people had a lot of fun watching me cut these steels cans, the steel from the cans actually fused to the edge of the REX chopper due to the heat, cutting things like steel causes heat right at the edge, I will see if I can take a pic of the blade as I still have not cleaned up the knife since Atlanta. There was no damage to the edge but having said that it depends on heat treating and the person using this kind of knife.
To get back to your original question, for everyday use go for the 10v, it is easier to sharpen and tougher incase you twist the blade by accident.
Hope I’ve been some help.
Take care

Many thanks for the explanation Mr. Farid. It 's been very clear. Now I am more comfortable with an opinion as important as your.

I am unable to pm or email you, please post your email on here and I will email you later.

Can I ask, are these made for those chopping competitions I've heard of? I watched a clip of one on youtube and everybody seemed to be using a knife of same basic blade style similar to this. Just curious.

With the exception of the CPM REX 121 choppers I have made which were over 2” wide blade, the rest of my choppers are made to within the rules of BladeSports, most people like to use CPM-M4, I currently like to use D3 tool steel as it offers me a good combination of edge retention and the right degree of toughness that I need.
You mentioned ‘basic blade style’ , these choppers are just modern day farming tools, they have to have a single plain blade with no compound grind lines, there is also no limit on the thickness.

Can't tell you how much I want one of these choppers out of a super steel.

Just plain awesome.

Keep up the good work.

Hopefully, in the near future, there will be thinner stock available in this steel, so the knives can be made with out taking out a second mortgage to pay for all the belts you burn through making one.

People who have never priced the belts have no idea. The cost can really add up!

Not to mention the time and energy it takes to do all that hogging!

You need a cnc machine with diamond bits to speed up the grinding!

Too bad I don't work where I used to. All kinds of equipment there for machining diamond drill bits. We had a lapping machine that would have been able to take that thickness down for you without much work. (I worked for years at a plant that manufactured polycrystalline diamond drill bits for oil and natural gas drilling, mining etc)

This was a hugely expensive project and very time consuming, I used 50 ceramic belts to make these two choppers, the first went to a friend of mine and I promised him a slightly smaller version at 13” x 3/8” thick. Not an easy steel to use.
When you are ready for a chopper let me know.
