Farm Life

Thanks Razor. I've used mine a lot and like you say, it works well. Whether around the house trimming trees or off in the woods on large game, it is a useful tool. DM

We've been cleaning out the freezer and I found some deer meat. Some blade and hind leg. So, I thought I'd do some jerky. I used both the carving blade of the Empress Trio and a full flat grind boning blade of 01 steel to bone and slice the meat. I thought I would notice some difference in the manner the 2 blades cut. The 01 being thinner than the Empress Trio. But no. Instead the hollow ground blade of 440C showed better slicing ability. A fun project. DM

Sorry to hear about your dog bitten by a rattler. My mother had a dog that looked just about like yours. She would go and pick strawberries when she was in her upper 80's. Rattle snakes would be under the cover of the strawberries to escape the heat. Anyways the dog would get in between my mother and the snake so my mother wouldn't get bitten. That dog must have been bitten by a rattler over 15 times. After a while the vet didn't even want to see the dog. He would tell my mother to just give it a benadryl and let it rest for a few days.

Glad to hear your dog is getting better!

David, hard to beat good jerky. Has your dog fully recovered from the snake bite? OH

Hunter, this venison jerky taste more like beef jerky. Man. We've been watching her closely and I think she is much more cautious now. I've been getting her in some birds and she's found all but one. That one I may have not gotten a good read on where it went down as it's not flat terrain here. I'll get some pictures posted man~ana. Thanks for asking. I cleaned them with my 334 Trapper. DM

I love venison jerky, it's a real treat. Glad to hear the your dog is much better and able to get back in the field, that is good news.

How did your garden turn out this year? I've eaten so many tomatoes I'm turning red. Tomatoes, Green Peppers, Jalapenos, Radishes and Zucchini all did very well this year and I had plenty to cut up with my Buck knives. My new fixed blade 110, 113 Ranger and my 302 Solitaire did the best and got most of the work. So much fun. I'm sad the growing season is coming to an end.

It did ok. Deer jerky is a treat. So, this was a welcome find. Our rains came late, we didn't get much rain until the last day of July. Then they started coming regular. During July our tomatoes wouldn't set the fruit as it was too hot So, we built a shade. Squash did better. We put a lot of Big Jim Green Chiles in the freezer. Snow Pea's do well up here and potatoes. They have a good flavor. The Solitaire has the thinner blade? Good eating. DM

I searched for Big Jim Green Chilies and they look great. I will try them or some type of Chili next year. I love snow peas and potatoes too! The 302 Solitaire is basically the 301 folder with only the main blade. I have found it to be the most handy knife I own and carry it daily. The blade is about a half inch shorter than the handle which looks a little funny, but the handle length fits my hand nice and the shorter blade is perfect for many things, including my Jalapenos. I don't think it's terribly thin. For it's size I think it's pretty sturdy. It's also very nimble.

Gedd, that is Remington's fairly new 1100 Competition Grade. It comes with Briley chokes, multiple stock adjustments, a hardened coating on internal parts and on outside areas of wear. I've been using it for Trap shooting and really like it. Here's a full size photo. Thanks, DM

Wow, that is a great looking gun. I have not seen one before. It is very impressive. I was looking at a used 20 gauge older 1100 yesterday.

David, that jerky looks good. I am partial to deer sausage, myself (with lots of hot pepper).

I like that 1100, there. My favorite bird gun is my 1100 Special Field. That, pared with a Buck 303 or 301 was all I needed for a day shooting birds and rabbits.
