Farm Life

These power lines are seasonal. We use them only during cold weather and when we are raising chicks. I think I have enough 12-3 and grey conduit to get a hot plug out to the chicken's house. That would make heat lamps and warmers easier. Yes, he watching things. Thanks, DM

We woke to 4" of white moisture. So, we're moving all chickens into their large house with heat lamp making sure they stay warm. This weather is forecast to pound us today and move out tomorrow. My 334 Trapper was riding shotgun in case I needed it. DM

what breed of chickens are those, Sir? my great grandmother raised rhode island reds.

that looks miserably cold...its 81 degree f right now here. i could stand to have it a bit warmer even, but compared to that snowstorm and cold y'all are dealing with, im quite happy at 81.:) stay warm and safe this Christmas day, Sir.

A Buff orpington. A dual breed. We also currently have 3 Rhode Island Reds like your Great Grandmother (MGR her soul). Plus, 2 Barred Rock. All dual breeds.
"Twas, the night before Christmas and all through the house, the AC was running cause we live in the 'South''. Many of my Kin called this morning and after letting them tell me it was 75* there & threatening rain. I told them what the weather was like here. Their jaw dropped and they couldn't believe it. O' my Lord!...
This is our 4th snow and were at about 6". It's windy and intermittent snow, low clouds with fog. We're on the second pot of coffee and I'm keeping the fire going. (29*) I visited the wood barn to get more wood and noticed a cottontail had taken refuge in the barn. I didn't even want to spook him out in this weather. As He would make an easy meal for coyotes passing through. DM

understood. thank you Sir.

very nicely done........^ enjoyed that.

Ha, I bet there is no coyote alive within half a mile of your HQ, a couple of howls and you and your Remington would be out the door, maybe puma would wander by on his 100 mile circle...I even bet the 'yotes' have declared you place a "NO HOWL ZONE",,,,,,,,,,,300.

Well, maybe they have my number. This afternoon I was digging us out from the snow, shoveling the porch and scrapping it off the vehicles. When my dog kept standing by the front tire, pointing.
I thought she was after a rat in the engine compartment. So, I opened the door and tripped the hood latch. When I did 2 quail rocketed out from under the truck. I thought, even with a brain no bigger than a peanut they have enough sense to get in a dry place out of the weather. Note to self, I need to trust her nose. DM

Holy Chicken Mole there David ! Looks like you got some real work there to keep them from becoming frozen Mc Nuggets. It just so happens I'm up to my ears in fire wood.
The next time you're down my way let me know in advance if you could use some. We can fill up the bed of your truck for the ride home.:)
Your Pal , Tom

Tom, thank you very much for thinking of us. I'll give you a ring next time were down that way. DM

David,

The pumpkin pie and seeds look yummy!

Good pictures and posts as always!

We only got 1 to 1.5 feet of snow here in the valley by my house. Higher elevations in and out of town got much more, of course.

A bunch of pheasants made their winter home in my back yard behind the water rights ditch. Back there, I cleaned it up but left a lot of it natural and wild and planted a bit more. The area came alive with more good growth from a to z. The rest of the stuff back there on my 'town lot' has been taken care of for fire prevention.

The deer are thick back there with the other creatures too.

Take care, keep warm and blessings to you and your family.

Cate

Cath, that's a good snow! It won't melt off in a day or two. We have seen a pheasant, or so not many. Much more Gambel quail. Winter is hard on them. Looking around after this storm we found Cottontails froze. It lets you know, while we stayed warm others didn't. Thanks for working & planting along your irrigation ditch. Food plots like that helps.
It's nice to see the creatures come to it. Thank you. You folks stay warm. DM

This is an excellent thread and much appreciated. I love your self sufficiency. You have achieved the American dream DM.

440, thank you. I don't know about that but I grilled my wife some farm raised chicken between shoveling the porches. Thought I'd loosen her apron strings for all the cooking she did during Christmas. Now I'm off to cut some wood. So, yes-- I'll have some good dreams tonight cause I'll be tired. I used to cut all our wood with hand tools. Now, I use a chainsaw but still split it with just an axe and wedges. Thanks, DM

Ok, we've been out cutting some oak today to keep us warm. Here is the photo and I'm wearing my Buck cap. It was a promo offered at Cabela's when you purchased a 50 year Limited Edition 110. Our dogs are supervising the affair and I had my 334 Trapper with me. DM

Great looking Dogs David, I really like the one on the right. Looks like it has bulldog in him.
Here's my all White Husky named Bella Dog. Her favorite Buck knife is the Alpha Hunter cause she think shes the alpha female, over the cats anyways...

Doug, we like Bella. My youngest daughter collects Alpha Hunters. A great knife. He's an American Bulldog, (Moose). Have a great New Year. Thanks, DM

Me and the boys were out getting a load of wood for the barn today. A nice sunny day here. Glad I had it so I could get this to keep us warm. That's my Trapper in my right hand. DM
