Does anyone know what's the composition of Fastenal's O-1? Some O-1 have 0.90% carbon while others have 0.95%, some have vanadium some don't, some have more manganese than others. I'm curious who produces Fastenal's O-1.
 
As far as I can tell, virtually everybody on Bladeforums buys their steel online. It's the only way to go.

or, if you are like my and enjoy having absolutely no idea what you're working with, you can scavenge random steel scrap from roadsides, alleys, thrown away tools/parts, etc.

hrm... maybe that's why my heat treats are so finicky...

I bought some o1 a few years ago from them, I thought I seen a typical analysis chart on the package, its starrett brand but all I see now is Chrome, tungsten, vandium tool steel.

Thanks a lot! I looked it up and it's:

Carbon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .90
Chromium . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .50
Manganese . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.20
Tungsten . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .50
Vanadium . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .20

With those extra carbide forming elements and 0.90% carbon, it's basically a eutectoid steel =) My favorite.

railroad tracks are made from 1080/1084 and everyone lives near a railroad.
