I decided to turn my fat ASH-1 into a user recently. I am shocked and amazed at how well it performed overall with the factory edge. I am excited to put my own edge on it. I am thinking a 15 DPS but I will not know for sure until I get it in the sharpener and do a few measurements, but it will end up somewhere between 15 DPS and 19 DPS at the most.

As of now I was visiting the parentals in Arkansas around Mount Nebo and one of their 4 wheeling trails has had a tree across it for about a year now, so logically I used the fat ash to handle business.... Well....... to say the least I was seriously amazed. It performed so well in all facets that I decided to sell some other blades because the fat ASH-1 was just about perfect for a 6-7" blade!!! I cleared several trails and outside of the tree trunk I went through in the pics the ash would go through 1-2" limbs in one swing, anything over that took a little more.

Needless to say, I was amazed, like a hot knife thru butter...

It worked so well I am reconsidering using shop credits on a SFNO or a NMSFNO because I have my doubts on them outperforming the fat ash... Anyone know otherwise and have some input???

Here are a few pics to enjoy, I typically do not take a lot of pics so these are all I have.

Sweet pics ! Thanks for posting them.
The ASH 1 is a great knife for sure, but the SFNO is still my favorite. A Pic of an SFNO is what pulled me into the madness :-)

Great pictures! What are the specifics on your knife? Looks like it might be a non magnum handle of black canvas micarta and sage coating possibly?

Thx everyone!

The grip and handle design really keeps the blade in your hand well, and wont allow it to slip very much even when swinging hard, the blade just kind of stays in place on its own.

That is correct, non magnum scales and sage coating. I picked it up off the exchange and love it!

I have all three of what you mentioned. ASH1's feel best in my hands. Prefer the NMSFNO over the shorter version. I like the ASH1 nearly as much as Andy. Happy New Year, all.

I actually have the twin of the Op's knife, it was my first ASH1 !!! Like a gateway drug...

Very nice looking blade!!! Does anyone know the history on the my particular Fat ASH-1 or Andy the Aussie's one? Like the release date original price etc?

I have held and owned the NMSFNO, SFNO and the this Fat ASH-1 but out of the three the only one I have used is the fat ash, anyone have any user experience between the 3 other than just handling them?

...... they were a factory release in 2007 and in such a configuration about $290 I believe.

Andy are you still trying to corner the market on ASH-1's ? I know you used to buy up pretty much every one that came up lol . You must have some nice collection of them by now :encouragement:

...... ummmm ....I think I only bought two last year... ;) I just received one that I had been chasing for a few years :D and I look forward to the return of the Custom Shop... ;)

.....and I think the colour we have was called Desert Olive as it is a bit different to my other Sage ASH1 from a later period.
Andy has a good memory! Here is some info from the original ASH1 ad for the CG version:

Blade Steel: INFI

The ASH1 has been immensely popular. I like the ASH1 handle design better than the handle on the SFNO, but that is just my opinion. Thanks for the photos, and keep enjoying that awesome knife!
