Hey Bladeforums.

I'll preface this by saying that my dad is a stereotypical gun-hating, peace-loving, tree-hugging Canadian that disapproves of my love of knifes.

Now, I don't have that much in common with him these days, and would love to get him something for father's day that we can both enjoy.

Can you see where this is going?

He does a ton of gardening, hiking, etc. Everything I would use a blade for.

But he considers knives to be weapons, not tools.

SO: I want to buy him a knife. I know, maybe it's stupid, but I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a knife that would fill the void in his life WITHOUT "looking like a scary serial killer knife"? (His words.)

Thanks.

Personally since hes a gardener and hiker, i would get him a smaller Fiddleback Forge knife...Andy's designs are very practical for those applications and his work with the scales is amazing! I think they have a very non threatening look to them and they are beautiful knives:thumbup:

Victorinox Hiker sounds perfect to me. Even the most die hard tree hugger would have trouble explaining how a SAK is designed to be a weapon. Add to that the fact that they're useful in a million different ways and he just may come around. If you want something a little more upscale than the SAK plastic handles then perhaps the Vic Farmer in Alox or Swisstool Spirit X multitool (my personal favorite)

Does he have a sak? If not that would be my suggestion. Ah Sevorius ya beat me to it and I agree with you 100%.

If he has an aversion to knives, I'd get him a good flashlight like a Surefire G2L. Either that or a quality garden tool of some sort. I have been very pleasantly surprised at how much my parents love all of the useful implements that I have given them in recent years. If it must be a knife type gift, get him a Leatherman Wave.

I agree with the Tom Cat  a Surefire flashlight, and as far as a knife.
The perfect knife for the nature guy.

Dude, my parents freakin' LOVE their Surefire flashlights. If you do buy him one make sure you get an LED version. And, at least a twelve pack of SF batteries.

I'll echo the others in saying a Swiss Army Knife is one of the handiest, most useful, and least threatening knives available.

And although it goes against the general attitude in these forums, your dad sounds like a cool guy. Wish we had more people like him, maybe the world wouldn't be in such a horrendous sate! ;)

SAK has to be one of the most recognizable, least threatening and sheeple friendly knives/tools.

Get him a SAK and if he still thinks that is a weapon resort to plan B, hippies like weed:D

I think this knife might be the answer to your quest

I say be a little sneaky about it , give him a spyderco spydersaw this year, for gardening and pruning ,
next year a serrated Endura , and a few knife catalogs ,,,,,,,

1234,,,,,,:)

I wouldn't give him a Surefire, 123 batteries are a pain.
Get him a Quark AA model in either the AA or 2AA format and a Leatherman Wave. For the cost of a Surefire you can get both and AAs are easier than 123s plus he gets a good MT which can be appreciated by anybody for its utility.

Zenbori Soil Knife--it's like if Mora made a Japanese hori hori (essentially a cross between a knife and a spade.) :)

^Japanese knives are very cool as well. He might like one of their traditional friction folders.

I'll echo the SAK and Flashlight suggestions. Modern flashlights really impress those who don't know about them (which until recently included me; thanks bladefourms:p.).

I'd also add some other timeless classics

Opinel -there are so many inexpensive models that you could buy him a couple. The hooked gardening knife would be a good start.

Maybe a traditional Mora carving knife as well.

A case peanut.

At the very least get him a SAK classic.

Those are great ideas. I think I will go for a Leatherman. I cant believe I didn't think of that! I love my Wave.

He doesn't sharpen much, so I would like to get him a Leatherman that will hold an edge, and sharpen it for him once on a while.

Will the Charge Tti be better? I think he will like the look of it as well.

Edit: Opinel! Good call.

I want to get him something a bit more special than an SAK. He's had a hard year, so I want to get him something nice.

A Victorinox multitool would be an excellent choice as well. I like them a LOT more than Leathermans, personally. :)
