Fathers day present for a hippie

get him Multi-Tool , or SAK , those are tools , and knifes in same time .

Maybe he would like a traditional slip joint? GEC makes some beautiful acrylic handle covers. Case also makes some really nice looking ones.

Here is a pic from collectorknives:

...Maybe a mellon whittler pattern; for picnics?

Maybe review some of Koyote's smaller offerings...very refined and nice! The EDC convex offering are sweet!

Izula maybe? With kit and scales? Love mine...tough little fella!

he has an aversion to knives, maybe its not a good idea to force one down his throat, try 1234's idea. If you want to get him a knife any how, go with something that goes hand in hand with hiking and bushcraft, a Mora. throw in a custom sheath and fire steel.

I second the Quark and with it some rechargeable batteries and a charger to satisfy his lovely environmentally aware Canadian heart. Oh if you want to get him a knife shaped thing there is a Japanese tool that is used for digging that is basically a big thick dull knife. In fact any of the traditional Japanese gardening tools would be good depending on what sort of gardening he does. It will introduce him to the importance of tool design, then next year a good Japanese kitchen knife, maybe gyuto, then perhaps a traditional Japanese pocket knife and then he will be putty in your hands.

Victorinox SwissTool Spirit. I also like it far better than the Leatherman iterations.

3rd vote for the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit... best multitool ever. ...Or a Benchmade Griltilian 555HG... Who can't appreciate a nice 'lil USA made Benchmade???

Eneloops and a smart charger in addition to my Quark/Leatherman suggestion. Thanks for reminding me to the benefits of rechargeables.

Those are great ideas. I think I will go for a Leatherman. I cant believe I didn't think of that! I love my Wave.

He doesn't sharpen much, so I would like to get him a Leatherman that will hold an edge, and sharpen it for him once on a while.
...

Why not get him a Leatherman Wave?

If you're wanting to get a non-serial killer knife that's useful as a utility blade, how about a TUSK from Bark River?

They're a little thin on the ground right now, but there are still a few left from the last run.

Or there's always a Mini- or Mikro- Canadian

Nothing too over the top though. And you may want to make the "present" a hiking trip you plan for the two of you together. Make the SAK a special something extra you give him at the start of the trip. And you are correct - knives are tools first!

Opinel makes two styles of hawkbill, a drop point, a mushroom knife, and two different-sized saws--all designed for gardening. You could make up a custom sellection for his gardening efforts. I would guess at least one of the knives would end up becoming a regular addition to his pocket.

Get him a kana hoe.
I got mine from Smithandspeed.com

It's a Japanese gardening hoe that is my all around super useful tool in the garden

Tina makes (as well as many others) a hawkbill gardening pruning blade folder. You turn him on to a great knife. Tell him it does not burn fossil fuels like a gas trimmer does. Wood handles, metal blade, pins and liners. FULLY ORGANIC MAN! (Thomas Chong voice).

A good multitool,

SAK
Swisstool
Leatherman.

Neither of those are viewed as weapons even though they have a knife on them.

Victorinox, brand recognisable as a work/camping knife

VN53953 Victorinox Pioneer Harvester knife in Alox
A great gardening tool and looks classy

It has:
a main blade
a pruning blade
a saw
an awl
and a can opener

I just gave one to a similar profile person

Or a Victorinox Huntsman that is in plastic and has scissors, saw and a cork screw

I think we have a winner! I will second the Harvester.

No offense guys but most of the knives recommended here will all look like serial killer knives to the person that wants them to be serial killer knives. We've all known the person who thinks a SAK is a weapon. Nothing will ever persuade them otherwise.

This one has a flat edge for cutting throats. No other reason but to kill.

This is nothing more than a murderer's scalpel. For cutting out body parts to keep as trophies

My point is just because some kinves seem 'tame' to us doesn't mean the general population shares the same consensus.
