Someone said a while back that their fatwood dust kept blowing away when they tried to light it, I recommended that they put the dust onto some Duct tape and then try. I have since been thinking longer on the subject and came up with this ( not sure if it's already been done or not !).

I made some FW dust and placed them onto a strip of Duct tape along with some cotton wool.....

I then folded them over to make a waterproof little parcel about the size of a condom packet. My hope is that I can just split one side open and light it with my ferro-rod. They are so light and thin that they can be placed into a wallet or taped to a knife sheath etc.....what d'ya think ?

That is an excellent idea Pitdog!!:thumbup:
With an open mind, and that particular color of duct tape that you used,
they kind of do look like LARGE size condoms!! :D

Alright Pit, now go outside with the camera and show us how well they work.

Good idea!

I've used the same idea, but instead of tape,I wrapped some fatwood & cotton in tin foil.
Just sliced the top open & lit it up.

Looking forward to seeing how it works with duct tape.

Thanks
Cliff

Good idea, but if I were to go to the trouble of making a tinder package up like that, I'd stick PJC in the center instead and then you have something akin to a firestraw. I just find that PJC catches a spark and goes to flame much easier than fatwood powder.

The main advantage to fatwood is that in its wood chunk form it is waterproof and because of the high density, you get a whole lot of tinder material packed into a small volume. A small stick of fatwood can light many, many fires. Pre-scraping the powder kind of negates that whole compact volume/material advantage.

Is your plan to light the fatwood and then sort of scoop it out into your nest or are you planning to burn the duct tape too?

If you're burning the duct tape, I imagine the plastic and adhesive will stink like hell (and may be toxic) so try not to breathe it. Also, if you use it in a hobo stove the residue could be nasty.

I've done the tin foil and cotton ball gig with with fatwood and it works great, FWIW.

Might I also suggest wrapping the fatwood in waxpaper as an alternative. Fatwood tootsie roll.

My son and I took dryer lint rubbed with vaseline and wrapped it in duct tape. Then split it open and lit it up with the misch rod Randy sent us... it works FANTASTIC! Try it yourself.:D

I just pack a lighter and my mag bar. The bar never gets used in the real world.
